Notes
This image was also illustrated in Glenn J. Lockwood's "Smiths Falls: A Social History of the Men and Women in a Rideau Canal Community 1794-1994", p.25 - plate 13 - the caption reads: "Old Sly's rapids as reputedly photographed by John Nichol circa 1890. It has been traditionally claimed that these falls at Old Sly's could just as easily have developed into the central townsite of Smyth's falls. This seems unlikely because the drop in the river was not as great as Old Sly's and the head pond was much smaller. This waste weir channel was blasted out during canal construction, creating an island between this channel and the canal locks."
