Historic photographs of the exterior of architecturally significant buildings in small and middle size towns are relatively plentiful. Interior photographs of these same buildings are not as readily found so these five photographs of the interior of the Smiths Falls post office are somewhat unusual in that respect.
J.J. Kerfoot, a photographer who worked at the Moore Studio in Smiths Falls, took these interior images of the post office, but the exact date is unknown. His brother, William H. Kerfoot, ran Kerfoot's Books and Stationary Store. W.H. Kerfoot's name appears as the publisher on numerous postcards of Smiths Falls which date to the 1910 period. J.J. Kerfoot was undoubtedly responsible for the photography of the postcards. J.J., whose first name was John, began his career in photography when he travelled to Colombus, Ohio in 1889 to study with his uncle.
Indeed it could well be that J.J. Kerfoot took the 1914 exterior photos seen on the previous exhibit page. Those photos are in the collections of Library and Archives Canada, but their provenance is unknown at this time.
The processing tables, wooden sorter cabinets, and canvas mail bags show the heart of the post office's operations. On the public side, patrons accessed their post office boxes and discussed their postal needs at the service window.
