Heroes of Imperishable Fame: World War I Memorials
Introduction
"We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In Flanders Fields."

John McCrae

World War I memorial exhibit

This memorial exhibit contains the biographies of eleven individuals who served during World War I between 1914 and 1918 and did not survive to see its outcome.

Their names are inscribed on Smiths Falls War Memorials at the Veterans' Memorial Park, 41 Canal Street and the World War I memorial cenotaph at the Smiths Falls Public Library.

All but one of the biographies in this exhibit were written by Grade 10 History students from the Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute in the early 2000s. This research project was undertaken as a Lest We Forget remembrance initiative.

The title of this exhibit -- Heroes of Imperishable Fame -- takes its name from an Armistice Day tribute to fallen World War I soldiers which originally appeared in a 1924 Smiths Falls publication. This acknowledgement is reproduced on the exhibit page which is entitled Smiths Falls Remembrance.
