You can’t stay here; you must now pay your own way in the world.’ A new light broke upon the astonish- ed ‘ visions of the young man. He ac- commodated himself to the situation; left home, made his way to college, graduated at the head of his class, studied law, bee-nine governor of the State of New York, entered'the Cabinet of the President of the United States, and has made a record for himself that. will not soon die, being none ether than William H. Gerrard: ‘I want no more money,’ said a gen- tleman, the other day, who had retired from business, on the application of a friend to join in what promised to be a profitable intrestment; In answer to a look of surprise he continued : ’ Judge S. gave his son a thousand do] lars, telling him to go to school and graduate. The son returned at the end of the Freshman year without a dbllar and with Several 11eg habits. About the close of the vacation the Judge said to his son 2 1869, March 22, By cashpaid F. Treasurer: do CANNING TOMATOES.â€"Iu the Syra- cuse Union we find the following :â€" ‘*' ‘he most thorough and reliable mode of canning tomatoes is as follows: They are just sufficiently steamed, not cook; ed, to scald or loosen the skin, and are then poured upon tables and the skid removed, care being taken to preserve the tomato in as solid a state as possible. After being peeled, they are placed in large pans, with false bottoms perforated with holes, so as to strain off the liquid that emanates from them. From these pans they are carefully placed by hand into the cans, which are filled as solidly as possibleâ€"in other words, all are put in that the cans will hold. They are then put through the usUal process and hermetically sealed. The cans, when opened for use, present the tomato not: only like the natural vegetable in taste and color, but also in appearance; and moreover, when thus scaled, they are warranted to keep in any climate, and when Opened, will taste as naturally a!” when just plucked from the vine.” To PICKLP.’ Cccnmnnns.â€"The follovii ing is one of the very best recipes fox‘ pickling cucumbers.
