TUE Ezlitor of THE CHRONICLE feels deeply grateful to the} cornea- pondents who have continued thei1 contzibutions as if no change had occurred. Wait; till we get, this business properly adjusted boy.s and then the oid CHRONICLE will move. INSPECTOR CAMPBELL, who has been under, the weather for some time is not recovering his buoyancy of spirit. as rapidly as we would wish. We believe a year’s rest- would. have a rejuvenating influence. Ho attribâ€" utes his illness to overwork at the mid-summer examinations. On assuming the management of THE CHRONICLE. and coming into a difiefent relation with its constitu- ents, I take the privilege, before donning the editorial ““76” .of supplemenoing my Salutatory ad- dress in Mr. Mitchell’s closing number. PO THE CHRONICLE’S HE remains of the late Mrs. lerick McKenzie were interred ' in Saugeen cemetery on New Year’s r. Watch for .‘n snaps our business men are up; every week. £ of Yours Truly, CONSTITU EN TS. W, IRVVIK. 7 last. '1"; pays to One dollar "Opinion to . . i matter. The chief in- terest in the fight seemed to centre round the choice of a Mayor and earnest workers were found on both sides. The result was a substantial victory for Mr. Calder, who is to be chief magistrate for the year 1897. THE CHRONICLE has no opinion to give in the matter. Mr. Calder is the choice of the majority and now that he is elected to ofiice, we hope he will be able to give a. good account of himself next year. Mr. Sparling wasjffielected Reeve, though he was ‘ ia'éosed by Mr. A. McLachlan. SSTar as we know both are good 11$§,51and the town government would'be carefully man- aged by either of them. Mr. Sparl- ing will accept theiQQWtations of THEUHRONICLE, we fi‘épe he will make a'vigorious effort to reduce the heavy debt under which the town seems to he groaning. The tax last year of 27% mills on the dollar was a heavy burden, during the depressing times under which we are now passing. Anything that will reduce the press- ure will meet with. the approval of the citizens. It is to he hoped. how- ever, that the pruning-hook will not be used to our detriment. Of the Councillors we have person- ally met Mr. James Brown and Mr. Geo. Moore. Mr. Brown we believe is a level-head shrewd, well informed municipal officer and the fact that Mr. Moore stands at the head of the poil in the East- VVard Speaks volumes for the confidence the elect- ers have in him in returning him to oflice. Mr. Parker’s success in managing- his own offairs would naturally in- Spire the citizens to have confidence in his ability to assist in manipulat- ing the municipal affairs of the town. We have very little knowledge of the others and as discretion is the better part of valor we decline to hazard an ophfion. Mrs, Geo. Currie, of Atwood, sister of Mrs. Dr. Holt, who has spenta week \\ 1th her friends here, return- ed to her nomo on Tuesday evening The personnel of the council for 1897 is as follows :--â€" MAYORâ€"4311'.
