Those of our citizens who were awakened between four and ï¬ve o’clnck Sunday morning by the ring- ing of the ï¬re alarm. heard the ï¬erce gale blowing and saw that a ï¬re was in progress in the south end of Main st., thought for a while that the water works by-law hadn’t been car- ried soon enough to avert a disaster But the good fortune which had smiled on this town in the matter of ï¬res was still with us in this case and the ï¬re burned itself out in the building where it started without extending to adjoining buidings, thanks to the efforts of the ï¬remen and others and the wind being in a favorable direction. The destroyed buil ling was that owned by Mr. \V. Duignan and occupied by F Bryant. carriage maker, and I. Morrison. Saddler. It was rouuhcast and was originally used as the ofï¬ce and Show room of Swan’s carriage works. Messrs Bryant and Morrison lost. everything in their shops, the form- er estimating his loss at $800 or 81000 on which there was an insur- ance of 3300. Besides Mr. Bryant’s own goods, c.. several rigs belong- ing to customers were destroyed. Mr. Morrison lost about $500 worth of goods, c.. on which there was an insurance of $150. Across the street the plate glass fronts of Messrs Tasker, Dale, Yeomans and Glonville were cracked by the heat and will have to is replaced, but. all are we understand insured, Mr. Duignan has alreadyr arranged to replace the. burned building, on which he had an insurance of $500, by moving on the site ‘he large rough-cast building at present in rare of the blacksmith shuop The particulars of the mov- ing are given in the report of town council proceedings.â€"Mount Foresz Representative.
