PACIFIC COAST LOWER TOWN THE DURHAM CHRONICLE, March 10th. 1598 ‘oronto, ()nt Durham . stock At the meeting of the Christian Endeavor Society in tne Presbyterian church on Monday evening a recap. tion was held when a number of the young converts became active mam. _The Baptist congregation was min. istered by their esteemed pastor, Mr. Darroch, whogcame up from College for Sabbath. The special services are being con- tinued in the Methcdist church where Mr. Browning is preaching to large congregations. His theme on Sub- bath morning wall: “The Nest Stirred Up†and the evening "Heaven,†The special services which have been conducted by Evangelist Lowes and the pastor L. W. Thom, in the Presbyterian church for the past few weeks were brought to a close on Sabbath evening last, with blessed results. The attendance was large and a deep interest was taken in the meetings. The members of the church have been greatly blessed and a large number of unsaved ones were iled to decide for Christ. A reception service preparatory to Communion was held on Friday evening, when ï¬fty-eight were publicly received into church fellowship on profession of faith, ten of whom received the right of baptism. Others are yet to be re- ceived, while a number will unite with other churches. On Sabbath morning Mr. Lowes and the pastor spoke with mellowing eflect and.a large number partook ot the Sacra- ment of the Lord’s Supper. In' the evening Mr. Lowes preached a search- ing and eï¬ective sermon to the young people on the death of Absolom. A motion prevailed that the Coun- cil meet in Meaford in June 13th next. Mr. Binnie pointed out that the majority were tramps and said they were kept too luxuriouslyfl The War- den said it was not a question of poorhouse, Mr. Sing was sure they needed a House of Refuge, but now was not the time to discuss it. Mr. Bishop and Mr. Gordon pointed out they could sit longer if necessary to thresh it out, and after some warm cross ï¬ring the motion was defeated tracted discussion took place on the crowded conditien of the jail. there being at present 56 inmates and only accommodation for 32, the rest sleep- ing on the floor. > Mr. Bishop moved that temporary accommodation be provided, but this was ultimately voted down. Accounts for printing were paid as follows: 'I‘ucker Cousby $2.71, A. M. Rutherford 38.80, J. H. Ruther- ford $l.60. Co. printing for 1898 goes to A. M. Rutherford, his being the lowest tender. Court Clerk at Meal’ord, $75 to Geo. Lambier formedical service, re Cobeac. These recommendations were agreed to. That recommending the receiving of the report of the Ju- dicial board of audit caused discus- sion. It seems that tenders are not received {or all the jail supplies, and the members generally seemed to. think the principle of tendering should be followed. Later, the \Var- den and Messrs. BishOp and McDon- ald were appointed a com. to enquire as to who had the right to purchase, (2) what supplies could be most ad- vantageously tendered for, and re- port at June session. The clerk’s re- quest for an increase in salary was not agreed to, though all admitted that he was an eflicient ofï¬cer, The Warden appointed Thos. Han- bury.
