I have to thank the Poultrymen for fthe sumptuous banquet given at the lMiddaugh House on the evening of éTuesday after the judging was over. i1 found it a little troublesome hav- 'ing to go from one building the other ibut I have no doubt that before an- lother year the South Grey Directors ’will have a building for poultry ex- lclusively. I would also recommend lhaving single birds if possible and lchal‘ging an entrance fee for each Eentry. The 2nd pair not striped so well in hackle and hen not very good leg- color. Chicks were much better. The 1st pair were well ma- tured, the cockerel having a nice comb, very ï¬ne lobes, good hackle and yellow legs. The puller. was well matured a little too brickly on wing and too much shafting, The 211d pair were not so well matmed but will make a nice pair for winter showing. The old birds were poor, but the chicks made up for their elders. They were as ï¬ne a lot as I saw at either Toronto or London. There was four pairs nearly equal. Calling ï¬rst at the cosy little show room of Ramsay Morloclt we were schooled in millinery novelties by Miss Logan who told us much more about the new fall fashions than we are able to write or tell. For in- stance, the fall hats flare coquettish- ly off the fare. The three-quarter side flare is also seen and they both lend themselves admirably to the fluffy bang or the pompadour. This season the velvet hat is the hat of the moment, but the‘velvet hat for the autumn 'of ’98 must Show the velvet shirred, corded, machine stitched or covered with a tracery of applique satin ribbon. Dark shades of velvet Spangled with White polka dots are also used. In millinery the guinea hen is more in favor than the costliest of soft hued velvet-petaled flowers. The fall hats are lavishly trimmed with plumage and the speckled breasts of the guinea hen are now stamped with the seal of fashion. All sorts of pheasants feathers in a variety of colors will be worn, and the wise looking owl and gaily tint- ed quills are seen in close company. On the more dressy hats ostrich feathers will be worn, and among the novelties are ostrich feathers pow- dered with chen31le (1018. Many of the frlt hats show crown and brim in contrasting colors, and the low crowned broad brimtned sailor is tak- ing the place of the Alpine so long in favor. As to the color, all the tints of brown are the fashion, na- tional blue, the blues with violet, tinge, hold their own and the lizardl green, ox-blood red and petunia tints‘ are correct from the fashion Stand point. a i Friday and Saturday were the big opening days in our Millinery de- partments, and on Saturday last we made our rounds to see what was to be seen in the line of Fall head wear.
