Raven had an exper- ience last Wednesday which he will not forget. He holds achattel mort~ gage on the furniture of W. H. Burt. a molder, and formerly keeper of a small store on Division street. 11a alleges that he went to Burt‘s resid- ence which is over a store Opposite the Patterson House, to see if his security was all right and to collect a payment on account of the mort~ gage. During his tour of inspection he was led by Mrs. Burt into the bed room and while there Burt. who had been sent for, arrived. The house‘- holder was armed with a revclver and threatened all kinds of violence. A scuffle ensued in which the visitor was successful in securing hold of the revolver. The wife, who up to this time had taken no part on either side, demanded the weapon and thinking he was giving it into more friendly hands. it was given her, when she turned the shining barrel at Mr. Raven’s Head and demanded the immediate release of her bus. band. A revolver in a woman‘s hand is a dangerous weapon and this conclusion was hastily arrived at. When Burt .secured his release he grabbed a bludgeon and dealt Raven a co'uple of vicious blows on the head bringing him in a heap on the floor. The object was then apparent. He was thus reduced to a state of capit- ulation and was quite willing to meet any demands. A cheque book was produced and a demand for 82000 made. A cheque on the Merchant’s Bank for the amount was written and made payable to Mrs. Emma Burt. The latter was hastily de- spatched to get the cash “Nat sufficient funds" was the reply of the teller, and suspicion was aroused. Returning to the house another cheque for $300 was secured and that presented with the same result, Finding this futile, an I O. U. for $1000 was secured to make the thing more binding as the assailant thought Mr. Raven was induced to writea confession in the pages of the family bible. After this the prisoner was released and an information was sworn out. Friday morning a pre- liminary hearing was given before P. M. Spencer behind closed doors and evidence given as above, Burt and his wife being both committed to stand their trial at the present assizes. The trial is in progress and is certainly the most important on the docket. Tn «since were held in Owe.
