To ease his conscience at the close of his efi’usion, he says “ Gratifying features are that the norkmeu will get their earnings and the town, we hope. be saved from a. law suit.” What then can the “ Review ” be howling about? Isn’t it right the workmen should get, their pay ? Isn’t it well to save the town the eitpen:..e of what. in any case, would be a los- ing suit? Surely the reversing of a. decision to these ends can not be re- garded as a serious crime. The Board of Works certainlv ex- ceeded the“ appropriation. but had they stupped when the job was half done the difficulty could have been got over only by voting supplement- ary estimates or passing round. the hat to Mr. Kelly and the Methodist Church as Mr. Ramage suggests. If you signed that docu- ment. Mr. Ramaae, and we‘know you did. Whv not stay with the job? We signed it. and we think the Board of Wcrke acted wisely in making a good job of it even if they had to ex0eed the appronriation voted by the Coun- cil. though it would have been per- hapa better to have applied for more funds. In concluaion we mav say, we are no tool to Mr. Kelly, the Mothodist Church. nor the present or any other Council. and while we appreciate Mr. Kelly’s services we feel that Mavor Lstidlaw has valued them too highly7 in some or his pnhlic utterances. Mr. Caltler always had the faculty of making a poor month for the town. and if he succeeded in touching the sympathy: of Mr. Kelly to such a degree that he consented to receive the taxes free of charge the town is none the less under an obligation to Mr. Kelly. The job when completed will he a cream to the town. and a credit: to the Cmmcil that dill it. even though they bland-cred.
