Paul Kruger, as everybody knows. is an enemy to Great Britain. and in his tour through France, he was re- ceived everywhere with great- dem- onstrationa of joy, This we need hardly regard as a genuine manifes- tation of French enmity towards the British nation, as every country has its rabble class ready to throw up their hats and cheer with the appar- ent hero 0! the day. Though Oom Paul, who is now absent from his own country, can hardly be regard- ed as acourageous hero. yet he is not a cowardly man by any means. nor are the Boers a cowardly people, but urged on as they are by the head of the nation, they are rapidly working out their own destruction. which might long ago have been av- erted had President Kruger known enough to call a halt and surrender when he saw there was no other al- ternative. He still persists in say- ing that the Boers will fight to the finish, while the French rabble cheer him on in the perpetuation of his mad carreer. There may be danger of the President’s trip stirring up deeper enmity between the two European nations. but at the present time the matter can hardly be re- garded seriously. After along period of discussion and an almost endless amount of talk on the Cement industry it really seems now that something is in store for the people of Durham and vicini- ty. A notice appears in this week's issue. calling the first general meet- ing of the Company on Tuesday, the 4th day of December, for the purpose of organizing the Company and get- ting in shape for the commencement of business. A board of Directors will have to be appointed, and as every stockholder has a vote, it would be well on so important an occasion that every one interested in the prosperity of the town be present on that occasion. There is now no groping in the dark with regard to the industry as the Charter is already in the hands of the Provisional Directors, and the Stock Books open for a vast entension to the subscrip- tion list. We leave the question here for the consideration of the public believing the Cement works to be a profitable investment, judg- ing especially from the success of other companies now in operation.
