At the annual meeting of the Dur ham District Loyal Orange Lodge, the following resolution of condolence was unanimously adopted: Whereas it has nleasel an all-{vise Providence has pleased an all-Wise Providence to enter our ranks and. take from us our loved and esteemed Brother, Wm. Alexander, of L. O. L. No. 632, be it resolved that though in humble sub- mission to his will, which is always for the best, we feel that the Durham District has lost a Brother whose love and loyalty to the order is worthy of our emulation. Frlends and compan- ions, loved by all true citizens, resolved that we sincerely condole with the family and friends of the deceased in the sad bereavement, which it has pleased Divine Providence to afflict them with, and commend them for consolation to Him who hath said that He putteth our tears in his bottle, Not even a sparrow falleth to the ground without His notice and that all things work together for good to those who love God. She was going about in fair health until about two weeks before her death, when she seemed to get cold and it turned to bronchitis; and all the doc- tor and kind friends could do for her were of no avail. Deceased was born in the County of VVicklaw, Ireland, 77 years ago, and when about 19 years of age was mar- ried to Robert Cuff, and in 1845 immi- grated to this country and came right to Bentinck, then principly all bush, and not long after settled on Lot 48, (Jon. 2, now occupied by their son, John. She experienced the inconven- of hewing out a home in the bush, but by care and industry they made a comfortable home for themselves and their family. By their union they raised a large family, seven daughters and six sons, all of Whom survive, ex- one son, which: died 43 years ago. About tv. (-nty years ago the old pimple. and part of their family moved to the 3rd Coin, Lot 4?), where. she breathed her last. Ever since she formed a'- quainfance in this country, she was loved by all her neigll srs, for she. \ 'as ever ready to give a helping hand in need, and used to speak of a great many passages in Scripture. She. was laid to rest in the little cemetery near Hutton Hill, where her parents were laid a good many years ago. The funeral ceremony was conducted by Rev. F. Ryan, English church minis- ter, and was listened to by a large cortege of mourning friends and rela- tions. There is scarcely a farmer in this country but knows What backache is. Knew HI- Mun. A story about the late James G. Bat- terson, president of the Travelers’ In- surance company of Hartford. Ex-Gov- ernor Waller of Connecticut wanted to obtain a charter for a new corporation which he represented, and the opposi- tion called Mr. ,Batterson as their star witness. He was asked by his own side only two questions. “You 'have lived in Hartford a great many years. Mr. Batterson?” “Yes, sir.” charter '2" “No, sir.” Here his lawyers rested, leaving the rest to chance, knowing that Mr. Bat- terson could keep his end up in any ver- bal battle with ex-Governor Waller. The latter began by asking: “Mr. Batterson, you have lived here many years?” “I have.” “Well, sir,” added Governor Waller, “it is my wish that you may live in Hartford many more years. That is all. air.” Thus was Mr. Batterson’s opportuni- ty to talk shelved. Governor Waller knew his man. An eminent American lawyer, now deceased, was sadly given to intoxica- tion. On one occasion he entered a church while a minister was holding forth on the future punishment of the wicked. Fixing his eye upon the lawyer, who was reeling near the door, the preacher exclaimed, “There stands a sinner against whom I shall bear witness in the day of judgment.” At this the lawyer folded his arms, planted himself as firmly as he could and, addressing the man in the pulpit. electrified the whole congregation after this fashion: Ill-health “ puts the shutters up" In many an honest man's business, and there are thousands of cases on record where the only seeming pow- er on earth to take them down again Is South Ameri- can Nervlne. “I was compIeter prostratcd with Nervous chility. The Girl “110 Grew Prettler. Mr. Charles Whymper. the well known engraver and animal painter, told the following anecdote some years ago: “I dined at Mr. So-and-so's at Highgate last night. and as a mark of honor his eldest daughter was assign- ed to me to ta he down to dinner. She’s a bright girl, and I got along very nice.- ly with her and Lady Bletherington on the other side until the ladies were on the eve of retiring to the drawing room. As she went out she looked over her shoulder with such a withering scorn in her eyes that I knew I had put my foot in it some- how. Then it flashed upon me that I had misunderstood her.
