“v v'kulv' U1 wickedness will yield considerably less than nothinz. This. of course, is an instance where retribution gets round in a single generation. The late I). L. Moody used frequently to make the challenge. and it was never successfully met. that a case could net be produced where a man made money by damning the souls and bodies of his fellow-men, that some of his kin did not come to an untime- ly and unnatural end through the bus- iness in which the head of the house ”situated. Hake all the money you can. but make it honestly and in salsa. business. If y'ou have to Dulles essssienes or the interests of ,ses fellow-men to make a profit. gets the heel-see and live on bread .- .- _'Vuyt and his immense fortune divided amongst heirs, we are apt to sigh and say that honesty does not have its reward in this life. It isagreat pity that we are not able to follow up the investment and discover the dividend that it yields to the legstees, and learn whether "riches gatten by van- ity” shall really be diminished. A case comes to mind of a fortune got- ten together, or rather founded, upon the gaming table. The proceeds of poker, roulette and the wheel-of- lortune were put into a business en terprise. and seemed to possess the faculty, peculiar to money. of increas- ing. A snug sum was realized in a few years. and the questionable past seemed to be efl'ectually in the res- pecta‘ole present. As time passed. the evil sowing began to produce its corp, and as the family grew up. the sons manifested the disposition of their previous parent. and developed u sometimes looks as though vil- hiny paid 3 fair dividend notwith- stsnding what the Old Book says: "Treasures of wickedness profit noth- inc.” In this age, as well ss that of the Psalmist, ”we have seen the wicked prosper like :1 green bsv In Lord Dundreary’s letter to his ti oousin Sam, he warns thelatter to be ' ware of bad company: “You know 5-; 80in, birds of a leather flock toget ‘ her, ” read the letter, and Sam, who was somewhat simple as well as a stutterer, paused and putting his head on one side and scratching it. began to soliloquize: “Bobbirds of, a leather? B b birds of a feather? W- one l-f-l-leather? It’s no w-wonder they f-f-flock together; guess they hob-have to flock together to k-k keep warm.” There are people like the birds, who have only one little leather. and if they would only flock together and share the loneliness that they must feel, the world would breathe more easily. There is the man who says he has lived since last February without committing any sin, and he is surprised that some good people look at each other and edge away from him. When I hear aman talk like this I feel as if I 1 would like to have five minutes’ ‘ candid conversation with his wife or . l l are so mean that their wives have to go toa neighbor’s house to get a square meal. The trouble is they are measuring sin by there own cross-eyed standards. There are 3 every day by their neighbor and everybody else, but you do not find them popping up in a meeting and flopping over with such arrant. cant. e wise man saith: “There is not a just man on earth that doeth good and sineth not.” I! there be such a being amongst us we shall never know it until eternity dawns, for be- fore holiness is humility. A couple m .of young Salvationists went up to an an old preacher and said: “ ‘Ve have Fe spent all night with God. can’t you Pr lee ourlaces shine?” The old man repeated, sail in reverie. the words of the Scripture writer in regard to Hoses when he came down from the mountain of the Lord, “and Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone.” mad. his time figuring crop will husk out 2003 Mite tbutthe kind of “head” that vine is the one that top» a puir of browny shoulders. A At the close of the prayer meeting in the Methodist Church on Thurs- day evening at the congregation gave a pleasffarewell to Mr. and Mrs. Barnho se who left for their new home in Toronto on Saturday. The proceedings opened with the elec- tion of a chairman, which fell to the lot of the pastor, who after appao-i priate remarks, called on Mr. W. J. Bellamy to read the following ad-‘ dress: ‘ ance or nerve debility. First get the nerves in shape and then the stomach will be right also. A man may be an elder, a deacon or a ste- ward in the church; but if he works the flim-fiam game on the people he buys goods from. his religion is not worth the powder it will take to blow it over Gilroy’s barn. There is too much of this psalmosinging on Sun. days and “shinanagin” on Mondays. The worst of it is, that people try to make themselves believe that this kind of thing is not exactly crooked. We would like to know the difietence between a man who gets lots of goods and holds up the seller for an extra three per cent, discount. with the tion will beat the devil at drawing fine lines. The only diEerence we can see is that a man gets penitenti-, ary in one case, while in the other he {i usually gets the discount. ll . If some men were as afraid of hell as they are of hard work the devil ' would be lonely in this world and the ‘ next. The reason so many {all into evil ways is that they have only a _ speaking acquaintance with honest! toil. The greatest moral disinfectant in this world is work. It keeps men physically, mentally and spiritually in trim. Who ever heard of a hard worker having indigestion or the’ spiritual jam jams? When you see at man get up in meeting and hear! him tell how t e devil has got the I better of him, put it down that lazi-i ness has been getting in its Work on ‘1 1 him. \Vhen a man is physically "it” 3 i he is a match even for the devil in it most things.
