The fowl may now be put in the oven and roasted three-fourths of an hour. Let her truss her fowl as usual and then infold it completely in two thick- nesses of wrapping paper, securely fas- tening the paper with string. At the end or that time the paper is removed and the chicken returned to the oven and roasted as long as would have been necessary had it been tender in the beginning. AU}; ‘.IZLN ‘L‘ 81.1"” ‘ Lb Some time ago a railroad company of- tered a substantial prise tor the most attractive title for its fastest train. and though none of those submitted was ac- cepted the ingenuity of the competi- tors was not undeserving of praise. Among those sent in were such titles as the Republican limited, the Narrow Path express, the Liberty express, the Yankee High Flier and many others more or less good, says the Detroit News-Tribune. Although the novel com- petition practically failed in its purpose, it called attention to the picturesque and ingenious names which designate many of the important high filers which run daily over American rails. There is no better known express in the world than the Twentieth Century lim- ited, which runs with but a single stop between New York and Chicago in twenty hours. The title in this instance is a particularly happy one, for it not only symbolizes the century in which we live, but also the actual time occu- pied in the run. NAMES'OF‘ EXPRESS TRAINS. Another interesting and appropriate name belongs to an express which runs daily from Philadelphia to New York and which is known as the Brides’ lim- ited. This high flier gained its name from the fact that ever since its inau- guration last year it has not failed to carry at least one happy couple on a honeymoon trip daily. The Brides’ lim- ited is made up of three or tour Pull- man coaches, each hearing some title suggestive of its happy freight, such as Cupid, Hymen, etc., and the train is now extremely popular with newly married couples. The Green Mountain Flier is the fa- mous Montreal express for New York and received its name from the beauti- ful green hills through which it runs on its daily journeys. An equally pic- turesque title is that of the Sunset Limited, a Southern Pacific express, which dashes daily toward that El Do rado of horticulturistsâ€"Calitornia. Minneapolis and St. Paul are known as the Twin Cities, and so it is only nat- ural that the train which runs from there to St. Louis should be called the Twin City Limited. The exposition at St. Louis, by the way, has >en the means of giving titles to many new trains, among these being the Exposi- tion Limited, over the Grand Central. One of the most magnificent trains in the world is the High Grass Limited, which runs from St. Paul to the Pacific coast, so called because in its journey it passes over much desolate prairie. This train is one of the longest for passen- ger express service in the country, con- sisting, as it does, of thirteen cars, each averaging eighty feet in length. Western Hemlock. The introduction of western hemlock to the market as a building material has met with many obstacles. The hemlock of the east is far inferior to the western species as a building wood, and the prejudice existing against the eastern species is unjustly extended to that of the west. The latter is a hard, straight and even grained wood, near- ly white in color. It does not split readily and is light and tough. These characteristics peculiarly fit it for man- ufacture into boxes. It is also a su- perior wood for all inside finishing, as it takes a high polish and has excel- lent wearing qualities. It can be rap- idly kiln dried at high temperature without injury. Mechanical tests have shown it to p0ssess about 70 per cent of the strength of red fir and to be suited for all except the heaviest struc- tural demands. Large quantities of this timber are now sold under other names than its own. There is no just cause for the prejudice which necessi- tates this deception, and western hem- lock should be handled under its right nameâ€"Department of Agriculture Bul- letin. Patent Bertha For Seasicknesu. The patent sleeping bunk has been fitted on two of the cross channel steamers and has proved most satisfac- tory. The claims of the inventor, W. Whitehouse, were fully borne out the other day when one of the new bunks was tested on the Lord Warden at Dover. By means of automatically working electrical brakes the bunk re- mains always level. no matter how badly the steamer may roll. Besides being always kept level the india rub- ber springs and buffers so minimize the bank's vibration that the motion felt is no more than that of a railway train. It is now only a matter of time before the new bunk is titted to all the other steamers of the cross channel fleetsâ€"London Express. Royal Note Paper. A Berlin firm has lately been in- trusted with a design for note paper which the German emperor has been working out. The writing paper is to be pale blue, and the emblem. in colors and gold, harmonizes with the blue. The shield of the Prussian army, on which is the imperial eagle. is sur- rounded by the English Order of the Garter, with the motto “Honi soit que mal y pense,” and the chain of the Or- der of the Black Eagle of Prussia. Be- hind are seen the white points of the cross of St. John of Malta, between the arms of which are the two field marshal’s batons crossed and above the German imperial crown. A Home Moving Put. A two story brick house, weighing over 200 tons, was successfully moved from Sharpshurg, Pa., to Allegheny, a distance of nearly four miles. Most of the work was done on the water, a huge coal barge being employed for the pur- pose. The house had to pass under four low bridges, and it was necessary at each bridge to scuttle the barge so that it would sink some feet. After each experience of this kind the vats selve- Upon tho Public. uu “u I. {slum um: abstential prise tor themost w! title for its intent train, and 1“} no of those submitted was ac- : m, e ingenuity of the competi- i We: not undeserving ot praise.l up, ose sent in were such titles as . i, d, blican limited, the Narrow: ’ Du: ress, the Liberty express, the; had [igh Flier and many others. lead less good, says the Detroit. had )une.
