The actress made a strong defence for. her conception of the character and gave chapter and verse from the writer or 'dividuality by choosing as the scene of her début on earth the hallowed pre- cincts of the House of Parliament, her father at that time being Speaker of the House of Commons. Her early education was at Loretto Abbey, To- ronto, and the Convent of the Sacred Heart at Montreal. At the age of seven- teen she determined to go on the stage, and went to New York to study at the Empire School of Dramatic Acting, and began to show her ability by her clever character work in two matinées given by the students. Ala., relates an experience he had while serving on a petit jury in a murder case at Ed- wardsville, county seat of Clebourne county Alabama. He says: “While there I ate some fresh meat and some souse meat and it gave me cholera morbus in a very severe form. I was never more sick in my life and sent to the drug store for a certain cholera mixture, but the drggist sent me a bottle of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy instead, saying that he had what I sent for. but that this medicine was so much better he would rather send it, to me in the ï¬x I was in. I took one dose of it and was better in ï¬ve minutes. The second dose cured me entirely. ’I‘wo fellow jurors were afflicted in the same manner and one small bottle cured the three of us.†For sale at Parker’s Drug Store. You can always tell a young hus- band from an old one by the way he acts in the garden. Three months married he digs, whistles. smiles, and casts covert glances at the house as though some one was looking at him from the window. One year married he digs. smiles by turns and seems annoyed at breakfast being late. Two years married he digs a little, looks sour and glum, kicks the dog or cat and looks towards the house as though he would like to choak somebody. Three years mar- ried he sits on the door step and smokes while his wife does the dip;- ging. A Western lawyer recounts astory of a trial he once witnessed in a Tex- an court. A hsrd-looking tough was the defendant. His counsel, in a voice apparently husky with emotion addressee the jury something in this wise: “Gentlemen, my client is a poor man. He was driven by hunger and want to take a small sum of money. All that he wanted was sufï¬cient funds wberewith to buy bread. for it is evidence that he did not take the pocket containing 8500 that was in the bureau drawer.†At this point the counsel for the defence was interrupted by the con- vulsive sobs of his cleint. “Because your honor.†replied the defendant,â€"â€"“because I didn’t see de pocket book in de drawer!†“Here. man!†exclaimed the judge why are you crying so?†6:5 and Diarrhoea Remedy.
