Sept. 18.â€"Shipning men were much interested today in a cable despatch from Tokio, which stated that the Canadian Pacific Rail- way Company’s steamer Empress of China, on arriving there Sunday, re- ported that considerable changes have taken place in Pacific Ocean currents. They regard this as accounting for the stranding of so many steamers in the Pacific recently in the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands. The 'l‘okio despatch adds that the report of tidal changes harmonize with the Kobe Observatory’s report of a great earthquake in mid-Pacific, which preceded the convulsion at Valparaiso by several hours, and is believed to have made important changes in the bed of the ocean. Somers. of Winnipeg. who is regiscered at the King Edward to day, spoke enthusiastically of pros- pects in the West. “ The wow this year," said Mr. Somers. " will undoubtedly yield at least 30 per cent. more than any pre- vious harvest. With the increased acreage under cultivation and the unusually promising weather condi. tions there is promise of great re- turns. “Manitoba farmers,” Mr Somers continued, " are taking advantageof everything nowadays that facilitates the business of scientific farming. Quite a remarkable feature of farm life in Manitoba is the number of farmers who are installing telephones The Bell Telephone Company is mak- ing Strenuous shorts to meet the de- mand that has Sprung up for rural telephones and its lines will soon reach practically every farmer in. Manitoba who is desirous of telephone connection. The Bell peeple have, I believe, some twenty-five gangs en- gaged in the construction of rural telephone lines in Manitoba alone. Twenty-five to forty men are employ. ed in each gang, so that the work is proceeding with great rapidity. Not- withstanding the great distance be- ?tween farms in Manitoba, the Bell lCompany are building the lines. rea~ llizing that eventually all farmers. when they realize the advantages of I telephone connection, will become its l subscribers. Fully six thousand new ltelephones will be placed in farm { houses before winter sets in. "Railway construction in the “feet is also proceeding apace, and when the G.T.P.,-C.N. . joint union station is completed and the Hill road which is building rapidly. is finished. Winnipeg’s railway facilities will be unexcelled.-Da.ily Star. WAS A VERY SICK BOY.
