He was much ' admired in his rendering of several . Scottish songs in a very artistic style. To the maids, especially, this was the one night of the whole year,so far, and opportunities might happen. you know. In fact, they just had to hap- Tpen, for wasn’t this leap year? And they girded themselves for the fray. 'Old and young, shart and tall, fat and .3 lean, they hied themselves to thedance hall, arrayed in all their Splendor, de- termined to do or die, for who knows but that Chauncy, Algernon or Claudie might be there, andâ€"well. he might be, anyway. The thought that the ï¬rst time in four long years was at hand urged them on, and they wondered if Fauntleroy would say,as ! on the previous occ tsion, to that all ; important question, “y 011'†have to ask papa.’ In order that nothing might be naming, the London Harpers were engaged, and with the assistance ‘ of these well known high class artists, : the maidens hoped. ere morning dawn- ! ed, they might be too. Surely the old I adage ‘ Music hath (‘de ms to soothe j the sav. age beast†would not play them § false on this occasion. The Sons of Scotland had another successful concert on \Vednesday vening of last week. The talent provided consisted of the Spence-â€" Strachanâ€"Newcomhe Company, a strong cmnhinatiou of talent. who have been travelling Canada the last couple of years. The praise of the press is not nnmerited and the people of Durham were evidently pleased with the entertainment they gave here. Miss Newcombe is a high-class artist on the violincello anvl her num- bers were much appreciated. Miss St‘x-achan won theaudience from the ï¬rst. number by her unassuming stage appearance and the distinct, way in which she rendered her ï¬ne vocal selections. Amongst those from a distance were Misses Brevorand Thornhil', of Mt. Forest and Misses Munshaw and \Vilcmx of Flesherton. Amongst the gentlemen were Messrs. \V._Hill, F. Hill, Munsbnw and McAl-dle, Mark- dale, and Thornhill and Scott, of Mt. Forest. SONS OF SCOTLAND CONCERT The Hall'was fairly well ï¬lled, but not crowded, and a strange feature of the entertainment, was the absence of the pipes and exhibitions of highland dancing. The proceeds amounted to more than a. hundred dollars which pays all expenses and leaves a small balance in the treasury of the Society, Under the auspices of the Durham Public School, Rev. \V. J. Spence, Lecturer, assisted by F. A. \Vehster, Soloist, will deliver a patriotic address in the Town Hall. on Friday. Feb. 7th, illustrated throughout by lime light views, twgether with several patriotic songs. The program will consist or such selections as “The Development of the British Navyâ€. “Crimean W’arâ€, “Indian Mutinyâ€, Coronation of King Edwardâ€. etc., in all, over two hundred colored and hand painted views. An admission fee of 15c. for adults and 10c for children will he charged. See large posters and handhills for particulars. Shortly after twelve o clock. a most sumptuousxepasn was sem ed in the lowex hall, to whiCh all did justice, after which'dancing was resumed and continued till four o’clock in the morning. Lama's AND GENTLEMEN :â€" During the summer and fall we published a series of notices to delinquent subscribers asking for payment of arrears at one dollar a year or $1.50 if we should be obliged to place accounts in other hands for collection. We met with a generous response, over $700 being paid in. We thank all who attended to our request, but there is still a large amount of our money lying round the country and we must have it. We have placed a few. of our accounts in other bands, as some of our read- ers will soon learn. Others will go in about the ï¬rst week in Feb- ruary if not previously settled. ‘It costs us money to collect and we would honestly prefer a dollar a year paid direct to us rather than a dollar and a half through our collectors. If those who have not already paid will send us a ' dollar a vear for arrear s and a dollar for 1908 we will accept it from all whose accounts me not in the col- lector‘s hands.
