A communication from Lawyer Kingston, Mt. Forest, who Was in the services of the Town in the recent re- count, was read by the Mayor, in which he stated his willingness to act in behalf of the town in any future action that might be brought by the liquor interests to quash the by-law. The Mayor and Councillor Brown were in favor of retaining him on the ground that, being now especially well posted on the methods employed in the campaign, he would be less handicapped than a man not thor- oughly acquainted with the situation. After considerable discussion, a motion by Brownâ€"Robertson was carried. employing Mr. Kingston to defend the corporation in case theliquor interests made another attack on By-law No. A communication from Judge Hat- ton, Owen Sound, was read, re the local option by-law recount on Satur- doy. The report showed that 2.97 had voted for and 180 against the by-law. leaving the local optionists a majority of 10 over the 60%. On motion of McGowanâ€"«Kinnee, By-laws No. 532 (local option) and 535 (bridge) were read a third time, signed and sealed. The affairs of the defunct Farmers’ Manufacturing and Supply Company were next dealt with, and the town solicitor was instructed to foreclose the mortgage held on the said Com- pany under the terms of their agree- ment with the town. Mr. H. H. Miller. M. P., in a. com- munication to the Mayor stated that he had procured two cannons for the town to be placed in front of that new Armory, on the condition that the town pay the freight. In a. fit of patriotism, Messrs. Kinnee and Mc- Gowan thought we ought to haVe them, and the rest of the Council, not wishing to appear disloyal to their King, said yes too. The Town Council met in special session in the Council Chambers on Tuesday. All members present. The next to come under the hammer‘ was the town hall site. The Council had in the afternoon journeyed over the various sites in a body. and though all the properties had their good and bad features it was not possible to come to an agreement among the members as to which will be the choice. The McKechnie Diamond Mine on Garafraxa street was all right in some ways, but the majority seemed to think it was salted and not worth the price asked, about $50». The Edge and Irwin property on Mill :St. wastoo closeto the railroad for some. The combined price .. of these {two properties was $121). Next in ; line was the W. B. Everybody seems to put on a high value when a pros- pective purchaser is in sight, but it’s a different story when the assessor is on the scene. The newspapers have brought the matter tothe public notice, and the way in which contributions came in shows the world contains many good people after all. Reports in the Globe and News contained many heart rendering stories of suffering amongst women and children through lack of food, clothing and fuel. The danger is now largely over and eflorts will be made to locate any who are in real need. DURHAM CHRONICLE SANCT UM SIFTINGS. DURHAM. FEBRUARY 13. 4' IRWIN. Editor and Pmprietor. '1 own Council. THE Mr. Oliver Cromwell Young. who died recently at his home in Picton, Prince Edward County, Ontario. at the age of ninety-two, was a lineal descendant of Oliver Cromwell. He was the last surviving child of Geo. Young. whose father. Isaac Young, left Hanover two hundred years ago and settled in England. While there he married Rebecca Cromwell. cousin of the great Oliver Cromwell, and soon after went to America. George Young went to Canada in 1800 with other United Empire Loyalists but before coming he also marrie ‘ a Cromwell, his cousin, thus bringing into the family a double strain of the noted Cromwell blood. They settled in the township of Sidney, near Belleville, where Mr. Oliver Crom- well Young was harmâ€"Saturday Night. Unscruplous dealers often prepare corn remedies with caustics and acids. SIDE BY SIDE Dray AND Bus LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:â€" During the summer and fall we published a series of notices to delinquent subscribers asking for payment of arrears at one dollar a year or $1.50 if we should be obliged to place accounts in other bands for collection. We met with a generous response, over $700 being paid in. We thank all who attended to our request, but there is still a large amount of our money lying round the country and we must have it. We have placed a few of our accounts in other hands, as some of our read- ers will soon learn. Others will go in about the first week in Feb- ruary if not previously settled. It costs us money to collect and we would honestly prefer a dollar a year paid direct to us rather than a dollar and a half through our collectors. If those who have not already paid will send us a dollar a year for arrears and a dollar for 1908 we will accept it from all whose accounts are not in the col- lector’s hands. You may save money by remitting to-day. Notice to Delinquents I beg leave to inform the people of Durham that I have purchased the Bus and Dray business lately carried on by Mr. Arnold Noble, and am‘ now in a position to cater to the wants of the public in that line.
