GEORGE BRADLEY, her THIRTY DAYS As we intiumted in last week’s issue the trial of \Villiam Bx-itton. the young Englishman who re-paid Mrs. McAr-‘ thur her seven weeks’ board by skipp- ing out with n sixty-dollar watch, took place in the town hall, on ~\‘Vednesday 1:tst,hef0re Magistrate Telford. The extreme penalty fur the crime com- mitted, is, in this country 14 years imprisonment, but young Britten was let off with a month at hard labor, thanks to the pleadings of Mrs. Mc- '1 Arthur, who interceded for him. well-known resident of Egremont who died April 1 1th. aged 83 yrs. The trial over, Britten was taken to‘ the ganl. and Mrs. McAl-thnr departed‘ for home, satisfied that she had done‘ a kind act and smed a. 301mg \vziy- ‘ waxd from at least a two- months sen- tence in the 0“ en Sound coop. Mrs. McArthur “ent home, we said, and we might add that there she has been 93 en since t1 ying to find out just what the young miscreant did or did not take. In addition to the watch, ameer- schzunn pipe, belonging to Mr. Mca Arthur, tobacco and other articles were taken out of the store, and the latest article to be missed is avaluable and much prized brooch. The brooch is set in the centre with at Scotch thistle. and surrounding it are numer- ‘ 011s Scotch pebbles. A suitable reward is offered for information that W1“ 10. :d to its recovery. Many other articles of minor impor- tance were found in the lining of the young lads clothes, and in one pocket was found :1 pitiful appeal for assis- tance to a lady in Dublin, Ireland. stating that. lie was out of friends and . work, and could get nothing to do 1 whereby he could earn an honest, liv- iv .-v-. h.’ in". This is a. poor recommendation for Durham to getin Dublin, especially trom Britton, who has had several good homes in this locality, where he could have grown up as one. of the family, were it not for his utter thick- lieadedness and disinclination for hard work. Anyway. Britton is in for :1 month on the rock-pile, and we venture to say it will he the first time he earned his boztrd' in this locality. When he‘ comes out, the arm of the law may! again descend upon him for his other thievings and this time Mrs. McArthur will be as mmn as the Sphinx, so far. as leniency for this young scoundrel,‘ rwho so shahhily re-paid her tor his: l winter's board is concerned. l CRUELTY 1‘0 ANIMALS.
