Seldom has the Standard been called upon to perform a more painful duty than devolves upon us this week to record the death of an exemplary young man and valued member of the Standard staff in the person of Allie G. Lit- tlejohns. aged 23 years, 10 months. Allie was at his post as Monoline ‘operator until Saturday evening. April 9th. and also :in his accus- tomed place in the Methodist church choir. Sunday evening the 10th. After taking a special part in the singing of an anthem, !his solo part being “I heard the ‘voice of Jesus .say, ‘Coxmc unto me ,and rest?” he was obliged' to lwithdravv. The following dav medical aid was called in, and be- fore t-he week end, the three local physicians were with him, as also a train-ed nurse, .but all 'to no avail, as each day the case grew more critical, and on the following Sun- day, at 11.15 ‘he passed away. The fatal trouble proved to be that of degeneration of the blood, which led to hemorrhage of the bowels, the kidneys, and other parts. The premature ending of such a promising young life. has cast a pall of sadness over the whole community, and even men of stout heart and mature years, were moved to tears as they viewed the ‘ remain-s. Burial took place on Tuesday under the auspices of Saugeen Lodge. Independent Order of‘Odd-fellows, of which he had been an esteemed member. A most touching and appropirate service was held tin the Methodist church. the pastor, Rev. Joseph Young, officiating, the choir also co-operating, and the I. O. O. F , which was largely represented, taking part. Mr. J. H. Dundas sang very impressively the solo ‘entitled “Beyond the smiling and “the weeping.” Miss Leonie Mat- h-ews presiding at the organ. The large concourse which assembled at the church was a glowing tri- bute to 'the high respect and es- teem in which deceased was held by the citizens. At the conclusion of this service, the body was laid away in the zf‘amily plot, Markdale public cemetery. The floral offer- ings were beautiful. among which iwas a Pillow. from the family" the “Gates Ajar.” Irom the choir and League; “The Broken Column." with .mot'to “Fidelity,” xfrorn the Standard; wreath from 'the Base- ball .Club; wreath from Ja-s. Dil- lon and Harry Harness; and others. The pal] bearers were Dr. Durkin. Carman King. Lauri-e Munshaw, R. J. Gilf'illan, Thos. Davis, and J. W. Tucker. Allie commenced as an apprent- ice in the Standard office the 3rd October. 1900, and with the excep- tion of about dour months which he spent as mamager of the Charts- worth News a year ago, had been on our stat! continuously. 1H3 proved himself a superior me- chanic, industrious, loyal, genial. companionable and most trust- ‘worthy' was a young man of [life. abstemious habits, and admir- able qualities of head and heart. Follow- ing is the staff of teachers for this Year: Mr. J.L. McDonalld has the Bible class. :and Misses Valerie Edge, Sarah Edge, and Maria Rit- chie, have charge of the other classes. Our teacher, Mr. J.L. McDonald, believes in keeping up with the times. Instead of waiting until the regular Arbor Day on May 6th, he went to 'work with the pupils on Friday last and cleaned up the school yard, planted trees, and prepared the flower beds, and imâ€" proved the appearance o-f the yard genera-11y. It was with deep regret that we learned on Sunday last of the death of Mr. G. Arthur Weir. For over a year, Arthur taught in our .school, and during that time. he won the respect and goddwill, not only of the pupils, but also of the parents, and all those with whom he came in contact. He was a clever student, and 'few young men have 'had brighter prospects *for a brilliant professional career. To the bereaved family we tender the sympathy of this community in their hour of sorrow.
