Ten days and nights. with sleep- less eyes, I watched the wretched man, And since, I 'never dare to write As funny as I can. ‘ Oliver Wendell Holmes. 1 I wrote some lines once on a time, In wondrous merry mood, And thought, as usual, men would say, They were exceeding good. They were so queer, so very queer, I laughed as I would (lie, Albeit, in the general way, A sober man was I. I called my servant, and he came, How kind it was of him, To mind a slender man like me, He of the mighty limb. “These to the printer,” I exclaimed And in my humorous Way, I added,â€"â€"as a trifling jest, “There’ll be the ‘devil to pay.” He took the paper and I watched And saw him peep within, - At the first line ”he read, his face Was all open the grin. He read the next; the grin grew broad, And shot from ear to ear, He read the third, a chuckling nonse, I now began to hear. “Such puns are barley tolerable, they amaize us, they arouse our righteous corn, and they turn the Dublic taste a-rye.”â€"Norristown Herald. “We don’t care a straw What She zkespeare saidâ€"a rose. by any other name would not smell as Wheat.”â€"Arkansaw T2avoller. 2 “We ”have .‘made an out of the above.”â€"Burlington Hawkoyo. Among newspaper humorists, the pun is dying rout. In the old days, the good old days, the Burlington Hawkeye man and the Nox'z'istown Herald man, and the Arkansaw Traveller man would pun at each other like this. Every Latin master likes to tell his boys two ’puns. The first is a panning derivation of restaurant-â€" Res, 3 thing; Taurus, a bull; a bully thing.” The other is a deri- vation of virginâ€"“Vir, a man; gin, a trap: a many-trap.” Dr. Johnson said that the pun was the lowest order of wit; but to this Goldsmith repiied: “ The pun, in oi‘aor ”words, is the founda- tion of wit.” The best pun in the English lam- guage is Tom Hood’s. He went and told the sexton, And the sexton tolled.the bell. The worst pun is that of the man who fell into a ditch and rose with the remark: “How very ditch- tressing.” All old people suffer from at- tacks of sudden exhaustion, weak heart action and prvostmtion. The best aid in such cases is Forrovim. the invigorating tonic. which is preparpd from fresh loan beef, Ci- trate of Imn ‘amd pure 0H Spanich Sherry "Wine. It stimnIatos the digestion and strengthens the whole body. $1.00 a bottle I Tom Small a former well-known .citizen of Kincardin-e, who some years ago came to Walkerton to exchange his civilian clothes for a prison garment, and who has since been numbered with Bruce County’s convicts, recently fell in his cell and sustained a severe scalp wound. The unfortunate man is afflicted with locomotar ataxia a nervous disease which renders his limbs almost pIOWUI‘lt» s and he falls ’about the cell like one in a drunken stupor. The stone floor of his cell has given him many a hard bump, and is sail to have been painted red with gore during his recent serious fall. In better 'uays Small committed. the prodigal‘s mistake, and riot- ously tossed his last nickel over the polished lumber of the bar- room. Broken in health and for- tune, he was finally gatheiwd inI as a vagrant, and the. four walls of the Walkerton jail is the kind of scenery that he daily «opens and closes his eyes upon. His fate. has been a tragic one, and his posi- tion in the jail is a pathetic one. Small is 'a living witness of man’s inhumanity to man. A nervous Wreck in his prison cell, he might easily stand as the “horrible ex- ample” to frighten people. away from the distiller’s poisonâ€"Bruce Times. The Height of Thq Ridiculous. The Standard has been reliably in- formed that on Monday night of last weea a steer was brought into town suffering from what appeared to he an advanced stage of lump-jaw. The animal is said to have had a sack tied over its neck presumably to prevent its enlarged jaw from being seen. but it Was noticed by several Citizens who were curious enough to endeavor to ascertain what was being done with the animal. It was taken to the cattle pen in the G. P. R, yards, where it was tied, and during the night was re- mowd. Where it was taken, or by whom. the local authorities have been unable to asceatain, but are determin- ed to find out if possible. The die- appearance of this diseased animal, and possibility that it Was killed and the meat sold should be made the sub- ject of a thorough investigation not only by the local but by the provincial authorities asit is a serious matter. There is an opening for some interest- ing detective work in connection with this case.â€"Markdale Standard. A CONVIC 1‘ INJURED. UPON THE PU N. Who Got This Meat? THE DURHAM CHRONICLE Previous to the recent entrance examinations held here, a little daughter of one of our esteemed citizens decided that she wanted to try the exam. Her parents, however, did not favor ‘her ambi- tion, thinking she had not the 'slightest chance of passing, and refused to put up. the necessary dollar to give her a chance. A short time before tihC time. limit was reached. a letter was re- cei‘Ved by the parents. purporting to be from the little. girl‘s teacher, advising them to let her try. They} sent in the deposit and the little girl tried her exam.â€"and passed!
