Mrs. Jos. Blyth returned on Wednesday from Preston, where she spent the holiday visiting her daughters. The flood of Easter Sunday did not forget to visit this neighbor- hood, as Well as the rest of places ORCHARD. From our own correspondent. Pettigrew, left Tuesday for Brandon, Man, Fall Wheat looks fairly good, in this locality, considering the hard Winter. Mrs. Nichol, of Galt, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. .J. Kirby. The last regular meeting of the Glenelg Centre Farmers’ Club was held in the township hall on the 9th of April. On account of the floods many were kept away, but a goodly number were present and were rewarded by hearing a good address by Mr. Alf. O’Neill. He spoke on Drainage, and told how and what effect this would have on the soil. He showed that the crop would be in the ground a great deal earlier in the spring, and that in some cases crops could be raised where none are now raised, Drains should be laid deep enough to escape the frost and thick enough to take all the sur- plus water out of the soil. The farmer does not have to use his own money to drain his own fields. for he can get money from the township councils if he applies for it. This is not given as a gift, but as a loan, which is to be paid back in instalments, with asmall rate of interest. This enables the farmer to get the drainage dome and allows the drains to pay for themselves. There are many places that need draining and it will' pay farmers to {do so. If the field is one that the lane goes through, it may pay to drain the field so that the young men will not get mired when they come to see the daughters. The Easter services, which were special for the Sunday school children, were not as much of a success as was anticipated, owing to the unfavorable condition of the roads, and weather, and those south of the river were unable to attend on account of the bridge having been swept away. The next meeting will be on the 30th of April, when the Agricultur- al Representative for the County, Mr. Hugh «C. Duff, Will address the meeting. This should be a good meeting, anda good turnout is expected, even if it is in seeding- DRAINAGE PROBLEMS. :55 n in seeding.
