THE DURHAM CHRONICLE. l l l I I The flood of Easter Sunday did not forget to visit this neighbor- hood, as well as the rest of places Mr. Peter Cornish’s bridge across the river, which Was erected last fall. was taken away, also the bridge at Dodvds’ Mills, and about one hundred feet of the mill dam fivas Washed away also. Mr. l l I Dodds’ customers have circulated a subscription list to raise money to assist him in repairing the dam at once, which Was very heartily responded to, and already a goodly sum has been contributed. ORCHARD. From our own correspondent. Spring is coming, but it seems in no particular hurry about it. A few of the farmers here hme started to plough, but report con- siderable frost still in the glound. Mrs. Jos. Blyth returned on Wednesday from Preston, Where she spent the holiday visitimg her daughters. Miss E. Eddipgton returned on Wednesday to Toronto, to resume her studies at business college. Those from this vicinity .who will assist on the program at the Shredded Wlheat Banquet at Hol- stein are .Mr. W. Dickson, little Misses Ferne and Thelma Brown, and Miss L, Bradley. Mr. Arthur Gadd, Who has been assisting’ his brother-aim-laW, Mr. A. P-ettigrew, left Tuesday for Brandon, Man, Mrs. Nichol, of Gait, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. .J. Kirby. Fall Wheat looks fairly good, in this locality, considering the hard winter. The last regular meeting of the Glenelg Centre Farmers’ Club was held in the township hall on the 9th of April. On account of the floods many were kept away, but a goodly number were present and were rewarded by hearing a good address by Mr. Alf. O’Neill. He spoke on Drainage, and told how and what effect this would have on the soil. He showed that the crop would be in the ground a great deal earlier in, the spring, and that in some cases crops could be raised where none are now raised, Drains should be laid deep enough to escape the frost and thick enough to take all the sur- plus water out of the soil. The farmer does not have to use 'his own money to drain his own fields. for he can get money from the township councils if “he applies for it. This is not given as a gift, but as a loan, which is to :be paid back in instalments, with asmall rate of interest. This enables the farmer to get the drainage dome and allows the drains to pay for themselves. There are many places that need draining and it will’ pay farmers to {do so. If the field is one that the lane goes through, it may pay to drain the The next meeting will be on the 30th of April,.W1hen the Agricultur- al Representative for the County, Mr. Hugh «C. Duff, will address the meeting. This should be a good meeting, and a good tunnout is expected, even if it is in seeding. The Easter services, which were special for the Sunday school children, were not as much of a success as was anticipated, owing to the unfavorable condition of tihe roads, and weather, and those south of the river were unable to attend on, account of the bridge having been swept away. ‘ The Misses Hoeflin, of Toronto: visited the parental home here last week. Mr. James Edwards is the old nhotel.
