As to what he ha since said on landing at Halifax, Lord Among the numerous errors of judgment which marked the Laurier tour through Ontario, the Peterborough incident shines as a peculiarly bright example. The Liberal leader in his speech at Peterborough attempted to call Lord Milner, of all men, as a Wit- ness in behalf of the Laurier navy. The attempt was ill-considered, Lord Milner being then in Can- ada. It so happens that Lord Mil- ner stands in a group of British statesmen who are pre-eminent as empire builders, in whose scheme of things the Laurier navy would and could have no lace. Yet Sll‘ Wilfrid Laurier bol 1y proclaimed on the platform at Peterborough that Lord Milner approved of a Canadian navy as the best way by which Canada could help the mother country. Lord Milner was made aware of the use to which his name had been put at Peter- borongh. His reply was that in his speech _in_ Toronto four years When you nave a baa cold you want the best medicine obtainable so as to cure it with as little de- .ay as possible. Speaker of the House of Commons, will soon be appointed to the Senate, and that after the redistribution Grey County will have but two members. While we think the Senate should be abol- ished, yet, if it is to be retained as a place of reward for faithful party men, nobody can very well dispute Dr. Sproule’s claim on the Conservative party, as he is about the oldest member of the Com- mons, and was always a diligent member. He has devoted his life to politics rather than to the prac- tice of his profession. Before the general elections last year, Mr. R. L. Borden and some of his lieuten- ants were in a constituency near Grey County, and sought to know why a clever young doctor had refused the Conservative nomin- ation. “Well.” he said, “most of my life is ahead of me, and I have de- cided not to become a Landerkin or s fiproule.” He explained that what he meant was that Dr. S roule and the late Dr. Lander- ]: n were on op site sides in po- litics sad sst or adjoining con- Now in stock and arriving daily FALL IMPORTATIONS OF“ The following recently appeared in the Toronto Star: LONG AND FAITHFUL SERVICE. Ierii' Wilfrid Laurier still dis- posed to quote Lord Milner as his witness? for Xmas and Presentation Gifts. Milner added, “The British peo- 'ple will welcome anything Canada may decide to do and approve the spirit in which she has taken the matter up. Personally I favor Canada and the self-governing dominions creating their own na- vies, though this would be of lit- tle use if, when established, they did not act as one. Meanwhile, as it will take time to build up a Canadian navy, a direct contribu- tion to the British navy may be desirable, preferably of ships, not money. But any share the domin- ions take in Imperial defence should involve a share in the con- trol of policy. They are not trib- utary states but partners in the Etppire.” FANCY GOODS Miss E. E.
