The advance was made to extend over a front of ‘over three miles. We have taken a ,considerable number of prisoners, of iwhom more than 100 already have ireached the collecting stations. Four itrench mortars and fifteen machine 'guns were captured. Our casualties gwere slight. Yesterday an aerial pa- }trol of our machines was engaged ; heavily by a strong hostile formation. ‘Four of our aeroplanes failed to re- turn; one of the enemy machines is known to have been brought down.” The report from British headquarters in France Sunday night reads: “The total prisoners taken in yesterday’s successful operations against lrles numbered three officers and 289 men.” HM British Take Village of lrlesâ€"Ad- vanoe on Three- mile Front HAIG’S KEY TO BAPAUME â€"â€"â€"â€"wvâ€" ~â€" The British are now holding a formidable mass of trenchworks, which virtually form the key to Ba- paume. That powerful position, to- gether with the network of communi- cations connecting it with the terri- tory to the north and east, is begin- ning to be outfianked from the north- west. From this direction the sole obstacle faced by the British is the strong position of Grevillers, support- ed on the south by entrenchments in the Bois de Loupart. Startling Type of Vessel to Counter- act Submarine Menace A plan whereby cargo tonnage can be created in the United States and Canada “faster than Germany can sink it” has been devised by F. Hun- tington Clarke, the eminent American engineer. Mr. Clarke’s plan contem- plates the construction of a great num- ber of wooden vessels of 1,000 tons, to be motor propelled, with a speed of from nine to fourteen knots. These vessels, he asserts, can be built at small cost and by men of little skill. Each vessel would be mastless, smoke- less and of diminutive size, and would have such low visibility as compared with the great steel steamers ~now afloat that it could be seen by a subâ€" marine at only one-third the distance. In addition, the vessels, would offer a smaller mark, would be more easily manauvred in event of attack, and because of their small draught of from eleven to thirteen feet, torpedoes that ordinarily would sink the larger ves- sels of steel construction would “pass idly beneath them.” Canadian Shipyards to Steel Steamers 111 Gen. Venustiano Carranza was eiect- . ed Sunday President or .“ylexico by; What is believed to have been the largest vote ever cast in the Republic. f Although the voters had the privilege l of writing in or declaring any name‘ they desired, General Carranza re-= ceived all .._but a few scattered ballots. ‘ The estimated. vote cast runs all the, way from several hundred thousand; to 1,000,000. Mexico will now have a l constitutional president for the first. time since 1911, when Francisco 1.: Madero received more than 3,000,000*i votes. His election to the Presidency marks the climax of the efforts of General Carranza, who took the field against Huerta Feb. 19, 1913, after Huerta had seized the executive power. The salient feature of the bill intro- ; duced by M. Clementel, Minister of! Commerce and Agriculture proposed? the giving to the French Government 1 of the right to mobilize all able-bodied ', males between the ages of sixteen and ; sixty not now serving in the army,; who might be assigned to such work ; for the national defence as their fit-i ness and domicile made most advan-‘ tageous. Farmers or other persons in occupations directly concerned with the national defence would not be lmobilized, and public officials and Government employes whose services are indispensable would be left in their present posts. Severd Arm Restored ‘i A despatch from London says a son '. , of the Hon. J. O’Grady. a member of 1,; { Parliament, was wounded several : months ago in France in such manner 3 that his arm had to be amputated: The surgeons cut off the arm, removed the shattered bone and then put the i ‘ arm back again, setting the bone and 1 sewing the tendons. The arm has 3 now healed and is gaing strengh. . tThe patient can use it effectively. 1 i i 1 \ l I Great Britain will provide for the burial in single graves of all overseas dian wheat crop 01; 1917 at rates ewhat below the prevailing mar- aquatations. for friendless prisoners of i m the sale of Lord N orthcllfle’l u ”M the War,” has exceeded $500.
