Lake of Bays Kawartha Lakes BRITISH GAIN IN WEST AT TWO POINTS The British troops ï¬ghting in France have made additional gains be- tween Arms and St. Quentin and also south-east of Loos, in the latter dis- trict taking prisoners. The British official reports follow: Sunday even- ingâ€"“Our troops have made further progress east. of‘the Havrincourt wood and have carried the southern portion of Trescault village. Smart ï¬ghting British Capture and Hold Gonnelleuâ€" French Make Further Progress ‘ North of the Aisne occurred throughout tl:e day south-! east of 1.03s. ‘.3 gained further! ground in this area and captured some prisoners. There was consider- able activity in the air yesterday and much ï¬ghting, in which four German: machines were brought down and sixl driven down out of control. In addi-! tion a hostile machine was brought. down by our anti-aircraft guns. Four 1 of our aeroplanes are missing." i Hurl Enemy Back 1 Saturday Nightâ€"“To-day the enemy ‘ made an unsuccessful attempt to re- cover the village of Gonnelieu, cap-l tured last night. His attacking troops. caught by our artillery ï¬re, were driv- en back, leaving many dead in front of our position. We gained ground during the day by local ï¬ghting along the north bank of the Scarpe, eastward of Fampoux. and advanced our lines slightly north-west of Lens. In this latter area two other German counter- attacks were successfully beaten off. During the night a small party of the enemy raided one of our crater posts south of Ypres. A few of our men are missing. Saturday Morningâ€"We cap- tured the village of Gonnelien last night after sharp ï¬ghting, taking also a number of prisoners. An enemy party attempted to enter our trenches in the neighborhood of Fauquissart, but was repulsed. Artillery fire con- tinued on both sides at a number of places during the night.†French Win in Many Places The ofï¬cial communication issued by the French war oflice reads:â€" “Sundayâ€"Between the Somme and the Oise very active artillery ï¬ghting took place during the course of the day south of St. Quentin and north of Urvillers. Between Scissons and Rheims the artillery actions were in- termittent in various sectors." The text of the statement reads:â€" “In the region south of St. Quentin the artillery bombardment continued rather violent during the night. Be- tween the Aisne and the Chemins des Dames we made new progress to the north of Saucy and Jouy.†Violent Artillery Duels “Between the Somme and the Oise violent artillery duels occurred, espe- cially in the region south of St. Quen- tin. Between the Aisne and the Chemin des Dames we continued our progress on the plateau north of Sancy. Grenade ï¬ghting enabled us to gain ground in the sector of Hurte- bise. Our barrage ï¬re broke down four different attempts made by the enemy to debouch from trenches north of Braye-an-Laonnois. In the region of Rheims, in Champagne, there was intermittent artillery ï¬ghting, quite spirited at certain points.†CANADA’S LATENT WEALTH An Ottawa report on Monday said: The honorary advisory council for scientiï¬c and‘industrial research has received reports on many subjects un- der investigation. Among these are the problems of “the manufacture of nitrogenous fertilizers,†“the produc- tion of potash from feldspar. and oth- er raw materials by various proces- ses.†the “utilization of the tar sands of the Athabasca region,†“the manu- facture of oil and other products from oil shales,†and “the smelting of iron from iron ores mined in the Domin- ion" in order to substitute these so far as possible for the ores now im- ported for different purposes. At pres- ent no less than 83 per cent. of all the iron ore smelted in the Dominion is imported from foreign countries. Research Council German Munition Factories Seriously Handicapped Amsterdam reports: Advices from the frontier state that a strike has broken out at Essen in the Krupp Works. The message sent out from Berlin saying that the strike there was ended is now admitted to have anticipated that event. Though a ma- jority have returned to work, numbers rei ::ined array, to such an extent that the work of the munition factories was most seriously handicapped. Ac- cording to The Vorwaerts, the workers of the Deutschewafien and Munitions Fabriken decided to continue the strike. These number about 25,000. The concern is one of the lat st in Germany, and controls the i auser Works. 20,000 Prussian Dead A report from hench headquarters says: More than twenty thousand Prussian dead lie on the hills and plateaus north of the Aisne, for the fatalities in this new “slaughterhouse of Verdun,†in proportion to the length of the battle, greatly exceed the â€vumbers of the Prussians who tell on the banks of the Meuse. The French had by Monday counted more than twenty-ï¬ve thousand prisoners, and the wounded are roughly estimat- ed at nearly twice that number. . Abandon Drive on Italy A Rome des;atch on Sunday ,said: The big Franco-813181} offengive has â€"â€"â€" ___.' so disrupted von Hindenburg‘s plans that the contemplated offensive against Italy has been abandoned. Italy is thus free to undertake an of- fensivo of her own, in co-opmuon with the British and French. $10,000,000 Shipping Lean , The Imperm Munitions Board has accepted the oï¬er of Sir Thomas White to make a special loan of ten million dollars to assist in the gavelopâ€" ment at wooden ship building in Gas KRUPP WORKERS STRIKE Council will Investigate Mineral Wealth In the Spring Is It a Cough .7 » Hamilton, Ont.â€"-â€"“I am. :3. great be- liever in Dr. Pierce’s medicmw. Ordinarily, a few doses of Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery will cure a cough at the beginning.
