PAGE 8. WW- __, _ PRESS DISPATCHES, photographs and movies from France continue to extol the popularity and esteem with which the new prem- ier. M. Herriot. is held by the French proletariat. Wherever he appears he is cordially received and greeted and his appearance as premier under President Donmerque was favorably accepted in all political circles. The rare photo above. however, is one that but few people have ever seen of him. It was taken fifteen years agoâ€"in 1909, to be exactâ€"at the time Premier Herriot was a member of the French Military Reserves. He was known then as Edouard Pitou, the latter name being Ai'got‘something akin to the British “Tommy." And the pl while taking his “over-head bath." 1‘ COMIC ARTISTS have always pictured men of the stone age and shortly thereafter, with big mops of hair and long, flowing beards-â€" thereby creating the impression that those old timers never shaved and had no idea of what a razor was for. That natural supposition has now been discredited. Those tiny objects shown resting in the hand above are razor blades said to be more than 6,000 years old. They were found by a joint expedition of the University Museum, Philadel- priaâ€"at Ur of the Chaldees, Babylonia. The blades were chipped from Obsidian and were located in the graves of the Sumerians. plCDLU 0 Il\1 \v having one. Avndvthe photo shows a: his “over-head bath." PUBLIC DEMONSTRATIONS of an exceedingly friendly nature greeted the King and Queen of Italy on the occasion of their recent formal yisit to England. They were the guests of British Royalty and British populace had not been treated to in many a day. many interesting places to which the Italian king and queen were es- corted was Westminster Abbey, where the above picture was taken. It shows King Emmanuel leaving the Abbey accompanied by Canon Carnegie. Note the difference in stature between the tall, venerable- looking English clergyman and his royal guest. OXEN still play an important part in the life and customs of natives in the ancient city of Gwalior, India. Not only for plowing and hauling purposes, but equestrian activities, too. The photograph here shows an Indian with his son ast\tide a docile ox. Of course, it’s not what you would call “rapid transit," but thenâ€"the people over there have all kinds of time and they get there just the same. One consolation, at least, in this method of transportation. It may be slow, but you’re safenfrom reckless drivers in crossing the streets. 1 -1 -__-I:_- H Then, too, there’s no “high cost of gasoline.” “Hr: w: DURHAM CHRONICLE Ox-Back Riding in India “4”“ in the life and customs of ENGINEERS of the Automotive Power Plant section 01 we Bureau of Standards at Washington, I).C., have just completed the above pictured apparatus for obtaining data on the road performances of autos. The periscope-like contrivance shown near the front of the car is to be used for measuring the relative air speed the car travels. In front of the rear seat is a device with 18 automatic pens in its workings for recording any incidents that occur while the car is in operation. The unique outfit also has a camera in it for photographing the flow of gasoline n the carburetor. ALL the dogs of our acquaintance have no particular liking for music. Butâ€"here’s one that actually provides the “sharps” and “flats” all the way up and down the scale. He is known as a “singing dog,” and was recently presented to the Washington, D.C., zoo by William L. Schurz, commercial attache of the American Embassy at Rio de Janeiro. The dogâ€"which Mr. Schurz caught on the Amazon Rivenâ€"has a head like an ant-eater, cauliflower ears and web feet. ENGINEERS « PEOPLE WHO ATTENDED “TOYLAND” at the New York Hippodrome recently evinced much surprise and admiration for one of its many featuresâ€"namely, a white monkey. This species is very rare and the one shown aboveâ€"affectionately labeled “Ole Bill”â€"is the only one of his kind in America. He was captured in the Malayan jungles. “Ole Bill” at first was a bit excited and did not take his cap- tivity gracefully for a long time. Now, however, he’s become accus- tomed to it, and is allowed to roam wherever he wishes. The movie camera in this picture “took his eye” and he was amusing himself with the crank on it when our photographer caught him in the act.
