The name “newspaper” suggests at once that it is a disseminator of news and if it is to do its duty to its subscribers, it must publish all the legitimate news that occurs in the community of which it is a part. By “legitimate” is meant, natur- ally, news of public interest. Scan- dal, gossip and the like do not con- stitute news in themselves, but if aired in public court, then the newspaper that fails to publish the proceedings falls down in its duty Aâ€"‘An:n“" *hnflfi Whosoever is afraid of submit- ting any question, civil oar religions, mare in lave with his own opinion than with the truthâ€"WATSON. to its subscribers, especially muse at a distance whose only idea in subscribing to the paper is that it will keep them informed of what is going on in the old home town. There are some people who evi- dently believe that the newspapers take a real pleasure in reporting court cases, especially if the evi- dence is a bit “nippy” or sensa~ tional. We think we are safe in saying that there is not one reputa- ble publisher in a hundred who willingly tells of the troubles of others, or who publishes in his col- umns anything of a sensational na- ture, for the sole purpose of mak- ing what__some may call “interest- --â€" ..-L k- DUIV, Av; vu-v v--- 5" ing what some may call “interest- ing” reading. Many may not be- lieve it, but editors, like other res- idents of the community, are hu- man. It is a whole lot easier to tell of the joys of life than to re- port its errors and tragedies as aired in the police court, but pub‘ lic sentiment demands that all that is news should be published. A newspaper that does not do this fails in its duty; in fact, is guilty of obtaining money under false Country newspapers don’t make all the mistakes. This month’s Success Magazine, a New York pub- lication credits one of its anecdotes to I rm’ n S. Cobb, the noted writer. We thought everybody would by this time know his name as Irvin S. Cobb.
