Resolutions of various representative and important conferences have urged it. The Christian papers are now giving much space t6 prohibition news. The various provincial legislative councils have de- bated the subject. It has become a genuine issue in modern politics. The discussion have shown a strong minority in each council that prohibition should be adopted as the goal of excise policy, and the Government of Bombay in a resolution reviewing the report of the Excise Committee, dated Febru- ary 12. was the first provincial government to declare that “the ultimate object of its excise policy is total prohibition.” Since Buddhism and Mohammedanism both forbid the use of liquor. Rev. Herbert Anderson of Calcutta thinks that “if only the real judgment of the vast majority of the people can be made to prevail, prohibition is assured.” He points out. however. some of the reasons why the British Govern- ment is not supporting such a policy, chief among them being the fact that in most provncial governments, excise taxes form at least a fifth of the revenue. A meeting has been called for January 25-31, 1926, in Delhi, for the organization of a Prohibition League of India, plans for which are being care- fully made. THERE IS AN the other of a good man who had died and left $30,000. “What a pity,” said the other, “that he left it behind when he might have sent it ahead! But when I went to a policeman and asked him if I could keep a rooster, he shook his head sadly and said no. Why not? Because I have neighbors. My neighbors have a right to undisturbed sleep in early morn- ing hours. So my rights must be circumscribed by the rights of my neighbors.” _ .- a A ‘0‘ A ,,.j LL- L-“ UL IIVIBIIU m‘i‘his is tillemfulfilment of the law of liberty and the hall~ mark of Christian citizenship. . STATES On a single page of a well-known newspaper, there appeared the other day two striking headlines. One sand. “Mellon Files Recommenda- tions for Income Tax Cut.” and the other: “Churchill Hints Higher Taxes on British Incomes.“ The’ar- tlcles showed that almost at the moment that U., 8. Secretary Mellon was flli with the House Commut- tee on a s and Means a schedule prowding or sweeping reductions, m the United States income tax, the British Chancellor of the Exchequer was warning British taxpayers that ltomay be necessary next year to nenmpose the six ence in the pound cut from the ritish income tax last spring. .. Nobe the burdens borne by respec- tlve Income tax payers in the Uniwd States and Great Britnin. In the former, if Mr. Mellon's schedule. is adopted, a married mnnueerngng $5,000 a year will 32%” in in- come tax instead 0 .50 as for- merly. In the latter country, a mu;- xjned man earning £1,000 a year paid Income tax in 1924 amounting to £126, 413, 3 d., roughly $600 more than the American. ' Churchill's suggestion of. an in- crease will greet y disappoint Bri- tish income tax payers who have been hoping ever since the war for a cut. But at the same time, it comes as no surfrise to those who have followed c osely the slate of the British Treasury. What with the coal subsidy, the dole, widow's pensions, the cruiser building pro- gram and the expenditures in com- nection with Sin pore and Mosul, it was evident t at a real cut in taxation could not come yet. Never- theless, according to Churchill, the British are getting richer, not poor- er, as a nation, although not so ra- pidly as before the war, and the people. “may look to the future, if not With buoyant hOpe, at any rate with solid confidence.” So it is evident that things are not so bad as they might be.â€"Toronto Satur- day Night.
