Since then there has been continual discussion on the subject from coast to coast. The Free Press advances the sus- gestion that the explanation for tho unpopularity of ‘Ontario is due to the prejudire against Toronto. and people and papers outside of the province quite naturally ima ine that Toronto speaks for the w iole of the province. The Free Press «pointed out that if the rest of the country only knew the facts To- rono rarely reflects the sentiment of Ontario. Most Ontario papers agree with the diagnosis of The Free Press that the unpopularit)‘ of Ontario can he sununed up in one { wordâ€"-"'l‘oron((9." A writer in the Toronto Star. af- ter a self-examination of the sil- ualion, likewise accepts the. ex'plan- ation of the Free Press. He admits that. while Ontario may possess a little unp0pularity of its own. the prejudice against Ontario is largely due to "the much more aboumling unpopularity of its capital.” The un- popularity of Toronto he ascribes to "the self-satisfaction which is widely believed to lie. characteris- lie of Toronto." He goes on to say: "It there is anyone “'10 should be bold in llvtostation in Toronto it. is the foolish 1101-3011 \\ I10 first start Ml tho phrase Toronto tho Good on its cleadlx caioor. The praises were. justified. but should have been gratet'uliy received and forgotten. It is as dangerous for a city as it. is tor a man to think itself good. “It. would not he ditl'icult. to prove that, as far as the rest of Canada is concerned, Toronto is very local in her political thinking and enormous- ly pleased with herself. I remem- ber years ago a bright young wo- man who had. as a student. lived four years in Toronto. summing up Toronto's spirit to me in the words, “The ideal of 'l‘eronto. her chief am- bition and prayer. is to he always more. like. herselff " Sir John Willison. however, does not agree with the views of The Free Press. In the February issue of his monthly he returns to the. subject and while admitting the tre- mendous clamor in Toronto over small issues and the prodigious fury of its municipal contests. he is not certain that Toronto flow not speak it'or Onario. He thinks that on na- itional questions Ontario agrees with if it does not follow Toronto. Sir JOlln thinks that the real Htl‘ense of ”Mario is that it is the. only pro- Vince which is not everlastingly harping on a grievance: .. I A -s--- I.“ ----- "One begins to think." lie. says, "that the real olfense of Ontario is that it has no grievances. respects its neighbors. lives within the con- stitution, u d is devotedly loyal to Confederati n and the imperial con- iwction.
