But he since, we understand, had the chagrin of learning that the insurance company is out of the picture so far as his case is concerned. Had he struck a person, it seems, the insurance people would. have been right into the contro- versy, but a cattle fatality has not even a passing interest for them under this policy, we are told, and hence from a monetary, if not a humane standpoint the motorist would be better of! to have bowled over a pedestrian or two than to knock out a couple of beasts, provided it can be shown that he was in any way to blame for the affair, a point, we understand, that he is stoutly disputing in this case.â€"Wa1kerton Herald-Times. 'APecnliarPolnt A driver of a truck. which was in- sured against public liability, and which recently ran into a herd of cattle near Dunkald, breaking the legs of two ani- mals so that they had to be despatched outright after the accident, was under year. Last year I remember the tax man came just as the threshing ma- chine moved out and this year he came on the very day we had shipped some fat stock. It just seemed as though he timed his arrival so we should not forget our financial obligation or take any satisfaction in our grain bins or the check from the stock yards. From now until the 14th of December if you see a group of farmers standing at the street corner you can be pretty sure that the one topic under discussion is taxes. They splutter and grumble and make an awful fuss and then when the time comes they each one hand over their hard earned money like a lamb. Well Why Do Taxes Como Before Christmas? Why, oh why, must taxes coincide so nearly with Christmas? And why oh why must they go up ten gollaxjg evgry I suppose these things have to be and possibly in a good year one would hear very little about taxes, but in lean years they certainly do seem to take the gilt off the gingerbread. Be that as it may, since there is no way out of it we might as well smile and look pleasant and think of taxes as a necessary evil.â€" Walkerton Herald-Times. OTHER PAPERS’ OPINIONS People who think the world is getting worse every day, like to hark back in a vague way to the “good old days”. But isn’t it usually a case of distance lending enchantrnent to the view? It opens one’s eyes occasionally to run across facts about conditions in the “v- VIII-.1 “good did days”. Here is a news item from the Christian Guardian of Jan- uary 9. 1830. just_a hundred years ago: ___-£-._ .1 uuly U, LUUV. Juuv w .C“-.“-vâ€" V â€"-__ V “The slave ship Fame of .Cadiz arrived at Havana from the coast of Africaâ€" lended three thousand and odd sick. slaves and lost six hundred slaves and sixty of her crew on her passage from Africa.” Again. coming down to the life-time of many who are still active what a marvellous betterment in living and social conditions since the “good‘ old days”. Many people can remember when the nursing profession. now one of the greatest vocations open to women today. was a degraded trade. Accordâ€" ing to the Chatelaine Magazine. Dr. Abraham Groves. of Fergus. still a practising physician, “remembers those Idays before there was a trained nurse in Canada. and when a nurse’s chief qualification was her ability to make a poultice. When she wore trains to her dresses. carried her knife. fork and spoon in her pocket. and her her daily ration of beer. When the nurses had their meals in a room in the basement opposite the engine room. and when they were frequently dismissed for ne- glect. rowdiness or incompetence. Ster- ilization was unknown. The operating table was a plain kitchen table without attachments of any kind. and doctors operated in blood-stained garments.” That was the “good old days” that many of our older citizens can remem- iberrâ€"St. Marys Journal-Argus. Time and effort expended to eflect the saving of a g penny here and a nickle there often is a source of loss instead of gain. Shopping around for an hour in the hape of saving a few cents on a trivial purchase is one example of this. Another is to buy an inferior article when a good one would cost but little more. The same principle applies in busi- ness management. To deny one self the use of a reasonable amount of up- to date equipment in an eflort to curtail expenditures is not economy, because such equipment will usually pay for itself many times over in time and labor saving. dcmnnds of the customers ore changing. Spending money wisely is one of the surest means of making more money. Skimping is not always economy, and stinginess is not always thrift. Too many of us are “penny wise and pound foolish. ” Town Seizes Picture Show Alliston talking movie or picture show, or whatever it may have been called lately, is closed and. a couple 01' legal clamps have been affixed to the apparatus. For some time attendance at the talkies has been poor and instead of a show four times a week. the ap-- pearance of comedy drama or melon drama in the screen in the town hall was cut down to twice a week and. tin-- ally once a week. Ono weelr; lately there was no show at all. a vastly dif- ferent condition as compared with this month a year ago when Elliott Rus- sell were drawing full. houses four time'. a week. At that time. however. there was no skating on the river or rink and Elliott 8: Russell were showing some oi the finest and most popular pictures put on the market by the best producers. The talkie had failed am: with its failure it had. greatly dampened the popularity of the pictures The first intimation that all was not right between the picture show and the town of Alliston. which owns. the theatre. came to attention of the coun-‘ oil at its meeting two weeks ago when Councillor J. J'. Milligan. chairman of town property. informed council that the picture show was owing consider-- able rent and that Ellitt Russell had dissolved partnership, Mr. Elliott carrying the business alone.
