We congratulate Miss Dorothy Rit- chie, who has taught. the past two years at S. S. No. 14. Normanby, on passing her two entrance pupils, Glad- ys Schenk and Lloyd Schenk, the latter with honors. Besides being a suc- cess as a teacher Miss Ritchie took a great interest in the community. She wa a great help to the community club and was always willing to help at their literary meetings; helped to arrange their social evenings and played on their softball team. Her place as a teacher will be hard to fill and we wish her every success in her home school at Edge Hill where she is engaged for the coming year. Mr. Bert Barber has engaged Mr. Joe McCulloch. of Vickers. and Mr. Gor- don Grant has engaged Mr. Fidler of Holstein. to assist with the busy sea- Knox church. The annual garden party will be held on the Monday night following. July 25. Miss Dorothy BOgle returned home Monday from a week’s visit with friends in London and Woodstock. The applications are still streaming in the vacant schools in the vicinity. The Orchardville school received as high as 87 applications in one day and the other schools are receiving similar numbers. The Varney school, although not vacant. received a number of ap- plications. It will pay you to advertise in The Chronicle. THE DURHAM CHRONICLE two children, of Egremont, spent the first of the week at the Davis home. Mrs. M. Hudson and son, James, and daughter, Margaret, of South Bentinck, and Mrs. Mllburn of town, visited early in the week with the Part family on the 6th concession. Mr. and Mrs. Will Tlmmins and Mr. and Mrs. Albert McNally attended the funeral of their uncle, the late W. H. Hemphill at Flesherton last Thursday. We wish to congratulate Miss S. E. MacLean over the success of her en- trance pupil, Miss Ada Banks. Mr. Thos. Cook, of Markdale, is vis- iting this week at the home of his brother, W. J. Cook. Mr. 'and Mrs. J. R. Edwards and fam- ily and Mrs. Jos. Atkinson spent the first of the week with the Neweu tam- ilies in No. 9 section. Zionites arranged last Thursday even- ing to hold their annual garden party on July 29 on the grounds opposite the church. The Women’s Institute met last Thursday at the home of Mrs. Adam Anderson. About thirty ladies were in attendance. After the usual opening, Mrs. Alfred Bebb read an interesting paper on “Pilgrims.” Miss Mary Ander- son gave a talk on “The Banalities of War.” Miss Clara Jack gave a real in- teresting paper on “Current events." There was community singing and Mrs. Jack played several fine selections on the accordion. The question drawer brought forth some puzzling questions. Meeting closed by singing the Institute Anthem. Mrs. Anderson and daughters served a tasty lunch. Miss Jean Allan, of Manitoba, is hol~ idaying with her cousin, Mrs. J. C. Mrs. Wm. Paylor met with misfor- tune Friday when a frightened cattle beast jumped against her and it is thought she suffered a fractured hip. She was moved from her home to Dur- ham Hospital on Tuesday. We wish her a speedy recovery. The community join in extending congratulations to Miss Elizabeth Mc- Millan of Glenelg Centre and Mr. Jas. Doyle of Proton, who were married in St. John’s church on July 16. Miss Blanche Beaton and brother, Gordon. of the Centre have been en- joying holidays at E. R. Peart's. Mr. Donald McArthur, son of Mrs. McArthur and the late John McAr- thur, of the 10th concession of Glenelg, was married on Thursday, July 14, in London to Miss Annie McGillivray, of Detroit. formerly of Dornoch. Dornoch ‘EOur Own Correspondent) The annual Garden Party of Dor- noch Presbyterian church was held last Thursday evening on the church grounds. The weather-man was very kind as the rain held off until the pro- gramme was nearly over, with the re- sult that there was one of the largest crowds in attendance for some years. The ball game between Durham Hock- ey Club and Wiliamsford was very ex- citing at times with Durham as the winners. A splendid supper was served by the ladies in the basement of the church from 6 to 8, after which the crowd listened to an excellent pro- gramme put on by the Durham Pres- byterian choir, consisting of choruses, reading, solos and duets. which were enjoyed by all. The proceeds amounted to $85. Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Barbour, and son Wilfrid, of Egremont, visited one day recently with Mr. and Mrs. Owen Mrs. Gordon Ross, of Lethbridge, left. on Sunday to visit friends in Chat- ham, after spending six weeks with her brother, Wm. Smith, and family. Mrs. Thomas Smith and daughter, of Napanee, spent the week-end with the Smith family. Congrapulations are extended to Miss Annie McGillivray, of Detroit, and Donald McArthur, who were married last week. Rev. James Skene and his son, Rev. Bert Skene of Toronto, visited the first of the week with the former’s brother and sister, Geo. and Miss Mighton.
