The meeting opened with a hymn and the Scripture lesson was read by Wm. Web- er. prayer was offered by Mr. McCall. A reading was given by Oscar Moon and instrumentals by Reg. and Arthur Ad- lam. Another reading was given by B. Brown. followed by the singing of “O Canada." The business period was con- ducted by Mr. McCall and the last number being instrumentals by Walter Kennedy and Elton Adlam. The Nat- ional Anthem closed the meeting. Varney (Our Own Correspondent) The annual meeting of the Women’s Association of Varney United church was held on Wednesday. December 7, at the home of Mrs. J. J. Wilton. Rev. Mr. Mercer had charge of the business. All oflicers were re-elected. namely: Mrs. W. G. Blyth, President; Mrs. NJ. Kerr. Vice-President; Mrs. Wm. Eden, Secretary-Treasurer; Mrs. Harry Cald- well. Patterson had his prize winning show team on exhibition at the Winter Fair at Guelph last week. where they again captured first prize. and where they were said back to the man who raised them. This team has been the champion show team of their class in the district. and have brought many honors to their owner and to Bentinck township. Mr. Patterson chose the WJ-I. Kerr truck to convey his team to and from the diflerent shows. he preferring it to others because of its amny ad- vantages and its competent driver, Mr. Howard Kerr. A sweet solo was sung by Mrs. Wilfred Wright. This completed a ï¬ne program. While working in the gravel pit one day last week, a chunk of earth fell down on Mr. Wm. McMillan’s leg, in- juring that member badly. He was tak- en home in a car and latest reports state he is going around: On Saturday night last, Mr. Neil Alex McQueen, of Boothville, 6 miles south west of here, had the misfortune to lose his fine barn that was only built 9 years ago, by fire. He was doing his evening chores and went up into the mow to put down feed, coming down the ladder he fell, and the lantern fell from his hand, breaking its glass, and spilling the flaming oil in all direc- tions. His son, Charles, who was near by came to his rescue and together they tried to put out the fire. They had it under control and Charles went to get more help, on Opening the barn door the draft fanned the flames anew . Shooting to the top of the barn, the whole building was soon a mass of flames. The live stock, with the execep- tion of a few hens, was saved, but the building and contents was totally des- troyed. Word has been received here that a former citizen, Mrs. Mary Ross, had passed away on Sunday morning in De- troit, where she had made her home for the past three years. She was very well known here, having lived in the vil- lage for a number of years and was very highly respected. Her many friends will regret her death. Although an in- valid for many years she was a cheerful patient and never complained. The body is being brought from Detroit here and the funeral will take place from the Presbyterian church on Tuesday after- noon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in Mount Forest cemetery. (Our Own Correspondent) Miss Dorothy Taylor spent the week- end at her home. , The congregations of the Fairbairn and Holstein Presbyterian churches met on Thursday evening last and decided to extend a call to Rev. Mr. Aitkens of Toronto for the winter months. A meeting of the Women’s Institute took place on Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Thorne. Mrs. Hastie, the president, was in the chair. A good programme was given and several items of business attended to. Lunch was served and a social time enjoyed. The Y. W. Circle of the United church, entertained on Saturday after- noon the Y. W.
