DURHAM CHRONICLE ‘Wo didn’t get much candy down hora nor we didn’t hangar our stuck- in”. We simply nestled close to our gun. and ate banunnas. You a. C” u 3‘37 M you can carry for No doubt you are often put out by receiving letters at one time from San Nicolas and at another from Cebu. so I may as well tell you how it is. San Nicolas is a sub-post of (John and although another city, is separated only by a bridge. It is a much larger place but not nearly so important, and the poet otiice is in Celt). At times “hen I keep my wits about me I start my letters properly, but others I do not for the moment think and rattle off any- thing. My DEAR FATHER. The nutives had quite a celebration end fire-crackers and Chinese Ian terns vote in demand. I wish you couid no some of the lanterns. The na- tive. nuke them into all sorts of dupes end in imitation of animals They look real pretty at a distance. I van in midnight mass at the church hon. It was a fine a service as one could will: to see anywhere. Light- ed 11-” and lights of all descrip- tion! undo the church look like some “tornado. It is reported on the Island that Gen. McArthur 1139 reveived orders to put a speedy 3 Op to‘tiie rebellion. and it this is correct we will soon be looking for blood and thunder in the mountains I hope it IS to be, {or 1 am tired of being kept on pins and needles and expect to get my light put out at any moment. Our Com pany has received strict orders to Show no lenience or give no quarter to any native carrying concealed weapons and who should happen to Inc, for I never got such a shock in my life. My foot and even whole limb swelled to twice its natural Sth‘ and I couldn’t Walk for a couple of days We got quite a nice collection of starfish but I don’t think we will make much out of them. On the H3 turn home, about 300 yards from show the saw-pan broke down and we all got a nice ducking. We looked like cluowned rats when we got to our barracks, but soon changed on“: were none. the worse for the swim. Our QuartermasteroSeargeant got Us up a line dinner of chicken and cran berry sauce, unerkrout. roast beef, canned poaso and corn. soda crack- are and ilcughnnts. You can’t live 0'." new like you can at home. but that is a pretty fair dinner after be ing for filteon months on bacon and beans. Christmas eve a detachment went out consisting of eight or ten men, I do nor. know which. We marched across some rice paddies and ran into a couple of shacks and captured about 100 rounds of Mauser ammunition and a Remington re-loading outlir. We searched around for a while and found two natives hiding behind some women’s clothes. Ol course we took them prisoners and alter a little further search marched off. About half a mile from there we saw about dozen natives running through the rice field and opened upon them. We couldn’t tell if any were killed, but blood was found on the trail. In the meantime our own two Diggers. thinking our attention was turned away from them took at ll'iendly sneak. But they \\ 0m watched. and had got about tifty yzmlr. when “w turned and DU‘JI'trtl at low hot lilhlll balls into them. They stomp: l. One. nigger was disfigured in line shape and I don’t believe I err-r saw better shooting in my life. The Ollwr min was killed and that was all we cared You see you can always pursuaule a nigger to run if you turn your bacl; to him. Well, did you have a better Christmas Eve in Durham? Christmas morning hrokn fine and clear. and although it rained some in the morning it did not hurt. the (lzt\'..\ Ian. I was room orderly that lei)‘ and had to keep the quarters in good shape. After I got through with my morning’s work three mom of us took asam-p tn, a native. bout, aul went OR to Macture Island about four miles straight across the bay. to look for star-fish and shells. We got over all right bur as I was in my bare feet I got hurt a little more than if I haul my shoes on. I think I stepped on a jelly-fish. or else an electric ele hit be caught by any detachment or patrol. Of course we cannot shoot them down in cold blood, but you know we can pursuade them to run und then give it to them for trying to escape. Any native you shoot you are to secure his knife. bolo or what- over it is and produce it at the court and you will be exonerated from all blame. Once in a while a native is killed around here for causes un- known, but he is generally killed for running away when he is commanded to “ Halt.” If that order turns out good about Gen. McArthur we will have a little hell on wheels travelling through Cebu. W. Irwin, PHILLIPIN E ISLAN DS 6, FEBRUARY .21 1901. San Nicholas. Cebu P. I. December :SUtb. 1900. Editor and Propr‘etor.
