Therefore we desire to go on record in favor of the im- mediate enactment by the Provincial Legislature of the " Pettypiece Bill ” or some such measure as will embody the principles of that Bill. One of the dealers Mr. James Blackbu 'u of Manchesmr. lvlng., is at present in Canada negioaiuting for the sl‘xipusex‘n. of poultry. He smws'timt he would be glad if he rewived the names of Can:.dian poultry shippers so that the chicken could be Shinped (early in December. For four years the Department of Agriculture has eXpm‘ted the chick- ehs fatted at: the illusu'utiun stations to Mr. Blackburn. Tin-3 dealings have been perfecvly satisfactory and the prices obtained for the chickens have been prciitable. Mr. Blackburn said that he would like to handie 25,000 cases of chickens per week. The Department has also received a letter from Mr. Vm. Rothweil. Manchester.13113., Mr. Roth well says: â€"-'l‘here seems to be a very good pro- spect for all kinds of poultry this Christmas. 11' you can give or have any consignments send me, you can rest assured of the utmost vuiue be- ing obtained. I trust that I may have consignments from Izmada.” Mr. Hare, Chief of the Dorhinion Poultry Division. stated that these approximate prices should olfm‘ sub- stantial inducements to Canadian ex- porting firms to ship poultry to Great Britain. The poultry should be for- warded in a steamship equipped with cold storage. The railway and steamship companies Will inform shippers when suitable steamships will leave St. John or-Halifax. Even on small consignments of poultry, the freight charges will not be over one cent per pound, The chick ens fatted at the illustra- tion stations have been sold in Toronto, Montreal, St. John N. B.. Halifax, N. 8. Sydney, C. B., and Charlottetown. P, E. I., and also the dealers in other smaller cities. The price obtained for the fatted chickens in Toronto was 11 cents per pound; in Montreal, 13 cents per pound; and in the cities in the Maritine Prov- inces, with the exception of Charlotte- town at 10 cents per pound. The fatted chickens sold to the merchants gave perfect satisfaction and it would be the interest of farm- ers to fatten their chickens before they are marketed. The Department could have sold several times as many fatted chickens if an extra number could of been bought from the {arm- ers in the vicinity of the fattening stations. A Charlottetown merch- ant stated;--We'have a supply from the party to whom we shipped the last lot. and he speaks of them as be- ing very fine and expressed surprise that we could produce such chickens in this country. Almost any farmer in Canada can produce fatted chick- ens equal to the Government chick- ens at little extra expense for labor and feed. W. A. CLEMONS.
