THE FREQUENCY of late for acety- lene gas machines to explode is caus- ing people to stop and think before installing one for illuminatingr pur- poses. Du ing the past two or three weeks thred or four accidents. some ofthem serious enough, have been reported in the public press. Like many other things in common use to- day there is a certain element of danger about acetylene as a luminant and the recent blow-ups will have a tendency to mike people more care- ful. It must not be forgotten that thousands of acetylene plants are in operation over the country and in their present necessarily imperfect condition some accidents may be ex- pected. Scarcely anyone is afraid of an ordinary coal-oil lamp, yet coal- oil lamps have exploded, and others may explode at almost any instant. For illuminating purposes acetylene is an excellent article. but it must be handled with care. and no risks should be taken. Peterhorough is one of the most progressive towns in Canada and the spirit of energy and push has pervad- ed its pretty suburb, Ashburnham. On Friday Peterhorough and Ash- burnham voted on the question of annexation. and decided to join hands for cityhood by'a substantial majorâ€" ity. The conditions there are much the same as the relation that now ex- ists between Owen Sound and Brooke. An expression of the ratepayers should be taken and if they decide against a union that will settle the matter. Should the vote he favor- able, the people’s will show prevail.
