The ï¬gures given last week show- ing the total amounts paid in Ontario by way of bounty on wolves’ ears, would indicate an increase in wolves. In 1900 the boun'ies paid amounted to $1,017, and in 1906 to $8,082. But it is suspected that some of this money should have been paid by Michigan. However, let us not blink the fact that wolves are on the in- crease in the North, that the opening of new settlements, the pushing of new railway lines through hitherto unvisited regions, brings the wolvea into evidence and sets them ranging in new directions, and the safety of the game requires that they be thin- ned out. Still, Canada is a big coun- try, and the wolf hunting grounds are awav in the unfrequented North. â€"-I‘oronto Saturday Night : 'iora me the picture of a big timber wolf, with the announcement of an organized wolf hunt in Ontario and Quebec. Nexc day a despatcb from Winnipeg cold of some boys seeing a big wolf on the main Street of that city, which they chased across the river. They also got after a lynx, which they clubbed with sticks. The day followin a letter came io hand from Mr. S. 4. Sangqter. of Ottawa, [who edits the Canadian department [in the National Sportsman, assuring me that without doubt wolves are on the increase in both Ontario and Quebec. He says they are “ increas- ing rapidly ; they seem to increase in numbers in proportion as the deer and Other game increase. The Cana- dian Paciï¬c Railway Company are cognizant of the fact and, as aresult, 1 have been organizing a series of wolf ‘ hunts with the scene of operations in northern Quebec and Ontario. Under Mr. L. O. Armstrong’s direction a party of adout one hundred men leave for northern Quebec on Jan. 21, and on Feb 9 a second hunt commences north of Desbarat’s, in northern On- tario. Any of the Hudson Bay Com- pany’s men in these districts Will back me in stating that wolves are rapidly increasing. The Legislature of Quebec laSt year, because of this fact, raised the bounty to $15 (the same as in Ontario), simply because the question was getting too import- ant to leave untouched.†So it goes. When you start to brag in defence of your country, your country goes back on you. 1 Last week some infoxmation was lgiven in these columns on the subject :Uf wolves in reply to an article in a , New YUlk magazine Whalelu the im {presmou was conveyed that Canada i was over 11111 With wolves. and that anybody 1n quest of sport should come over here, put on snow'shoes. and bag a pack or two. Of course this country is not over- run with wolves. and a man has to make a long journey into the north country to get a chance to have a shot at one of these animals. In my zeal to defend home and native land I said last week that the only wolf story that had come to hand for some time was from Batoche, Sask., where a half-breed had been forced to climb a tree and remain there all night. Next day, in l turning over the pages of Rod and Gun in Canada, there stood out be; For any disease of the skin we can recommend Chamberlain’s Salve, It relieves the Inching and burning sen- sation inswncl; and soon eï¬â€˜eccs a cure. This salve 18 also invaiu his for sore nipples. Sold at Parker’s Drug Stow. Pipe Major Faro uhar Beaton, of the 48th Highlanders. Mrs. Newton, accompanist.
