A Partial List of Fairs Annouced For The Fall of 1907. THE railway contractors have made another start in Durham, and when they get under full swing they will soon make a good showing. A num- ber of the buildings have been already removed from the right of way. but there are some still standing. The residence occupied by Dr. Hutton has not yet been touched, but the moving gang is expected to begin on it shortly. It has to be moved only a couple of hundred feet, and once it is jacked up a’nd properly supported it will not take long to get it out of the road. THE Oran gemen of M eaford attended the 12th of July Demonstration this year at Barrie. They were dressed in frock coats and silk hats and made a very imposing appearance. Taste and uniformity in society dress will .do much to benefit the society but {under- neath the dress the greatest essential is a good character, and its well not to forget this. Many a societyr has had reproach brought upon it by the thoughtfulness of a. few of its members. THE \Vomen’s Institute will hold their next meeting at the home of Mrs. T. Allan, Varney, on \Vednesday 7th of August. Subjects to be discue- sed are, “\Vhy is Autumn So Beauti- ful in Nature? Compare it with the autumn of our "lives. Friendship, Salads and Canning Fruits.” .AII ladies are invited to attend and help to make our meetings interesting and beneficial. THE trustees of the public and model school here received a letter last week from Miss McLeod, who signified her intention to resign her position on the teaching staff. This will necessitate immediate action on the part of the Board to have her place filled at as early a date as possible. Miss McLeod is an estimable young woman and her services were much appreciated by the students, parents and-trustees. FOR the past four years the result of the Departmental Examinations have not been published in the Toronto pit- pers but sent to the principals of the different schools instead. This caused some delay in getting the information to the candidates, and this year the Department has decided to publish the results by Counties, which will appear some time next week. TWENTY-SEVEN Doukhobors, men women and children, attired in pink night robes reached Winnipeg on Sun- day. The pilgrims who are in search of :1. wa1 111er climate where they do not need to work and where they ex- pect to see the Messiah, tmmped it all the way from Swan River, a distance of about 300 miles. They will likely be arrested as vagrants. 0N Wednesday 'morning Mr. Chris Scheuermann left here for Stratford Hospital m company with Dr. Gun. Mr. Scheuermann has an attack of appendicitis and has to undergo an operation which we hope will be a complete success and that he will soon be restored to his usual health and strength. WE understand that Miss Hutton has purchased a. fine new Haines piano from Mr. Midford who has the agency here. Glad to see such a thing as a. musical luxury getting more com- monly used in the rural homes. A FEW weeks ago in reporting the death of Mr. Frend we intimated that; he left a. It is not pretended that all the places enu- merated above have spirit licenses, but intemperance in port and sherry or even in bottled ale is almost equal- ly destructive to health. Deplorable Effect. Intemperance has a deplorable ef- fect on the nervous system of women. whom it tends rapidly to degrade mor- ally as well as physically, unfitting them for those duties and responsibil- ities which should be the first care of harassing to the timid minds of so many of the weaker sex. It is surely an evil Sign of the times when the Very factory girls, .who think lightly of the present and still less of the future. form what are called “spirit clubs,” into vhieh the girls make small ['iayments to accumulate until Christmas eve and then to be spent in spirits, wine and (‘nkt‘fi Increased Facilities. Increased facilities for drinking are to be numbered :imrmg the causes of the increasing intel‘nperance among women. Women travel alone to a far greater extent than was formerly the:- case; women’s club afford every op- portunity to those who wish to in- dulge in potent liquors; some of the big stores and mammoth. drapery es- tablishments have licensed refresh- ment roome: res aurants and railway buffets continue to multiply, while the pastry cook with a wine license is very much in evidence in every resi- dential district. A woman in a good position in life may be intemperate to a degree Without ever having recourse \Ve want to know just exactly how the crops are in the County, and in order to get at the truth we cordially invite all our correspondents, and any others who will do so, to give us a budget next week in which special reference will be made to the crops in each writer’s vicinity. This seems to be a good way to cover the ground, and we think that many will be suffi- ciently interested to take the matter up. By devoting a small space to wheat, oats, barley, peas, hay, roots and fruit, a vast amount of useful in- formation can be given, and readexs in every part will become more conver- sant with the conditions in other lo- calities. A good active co-operative movement along this line Will be a means of disseminating valuable infor- mation to all our readers, and the work of sending in the information will not be much of a hardship to any one. This is a wide open invitation. and We’ll do our best to tell to others what you tell to us. Many women take to secret drink- ingâ€"the bane of womanhoodâ€"4n rea- son of the lonely lives they IiV',e to soften the sorrow which is the lot of so many women 01 to deaden that anxiety about _the future which is so Sirâ€"‘Vill you in future give my son easier soms to do at nites? This is what he has brought home two or three nites since local optume came into force here :â€"-â€"'If fore gallons of here will fill thirty-to pint bottles, how many pints and half bottles, will nine gallons 611? We tried and could make nothing of it at all, and my boy cried and laughed and sed he didn’t dare to go back in the mornin without doin it. So I had to send over to Hahn’s at Durham and buy a nine gallon keg of here. which I' could ill afford to do, especially when I had to pay the cart- age, and then he went and borrowed a lot of Wine and brandy bottles. We filled them, and my boy put down the number for an answer. I don’t know Whether it is right or not, as we spilt some while doin it. P. S.â€"â€"-Plense let the soms be in wat- er, as I won’t send to Durham for any more here.
