THE IMPLEMENT SHE“ Farm Machinery Worth Careful Caring lot. Practical Hint- “ to (Contributed by Ontario Department at Axflcultufl. Toronto.) Implement sheds should be I0 do- sixned that the accemhility ot the implements stored therein will] ai- ways be easy. Wide implement aheda are generally not as convenient u the narrower structures unless de- 1 signed with doorways on both aidel. or alleyways kept clear to facilitate the movement and storage of the im- plements. The storage of implement. in the farm barn or any other ex- pensive building is not economical. The Location. The implement shed should be so located that time will not be lost in travelling more steps than absolutely necessary with, or to get implements. either going to or returning from work. Where horses are used as the main farm power, the implement shed should be located near' the sta- bles, at a point where the teams can conveniently pass on the way from stable to field. On many farms the implement shed can be located at a point between the house and barn, a ‘ very desirable location, especially it .the building is used for the motor car and workshop l -u-v â€"â€"v_ A dry earth or gravel floor is all i i that is necessary it the shed is lo- ;cated on well-drained ground. Ce- . ment is desirable where the cost at 3 such is not excessive. Wood floors are 'the most comfortable to work on. 1 but such are expensive and may harâ€" bor vermin. Sand floors are objec- tionable. If the earth floor is damp at any time of the year iron may rust. Narrow boards placed under ‘the wheels or runners will aid in their preservation. .0 Walls. About III-brooding- it"â€" The implement shed wells need only be heavy enough to keep out the sun, the wind and rain, and Itrong enough to ,give rigidity to the struc- ture. Vertical boards end button: on u 2 x 4 inch fume will provide such 3t low cost, or matched dmp Iidin: over : ship-lap sheathing will give a. more durable and better ”peering A - â€"_-_ “A‘-‘ . "IVS U “Ill-vow wuâ€" â€" wall at a higher coat. Corrugated galvanised sheets or aiding does very well, and has the additional advan- taze oi fire-proofing the structure. Cement block and brick walls, if on good foundations, are very desirable from the durability ataudpoint, but much too farms. For narrow implement sheds the cheapest durable root is the wide root board and batten. Galvanised iron sheets it well supported on a strong pole or 2 x 4 inch roof frame makes an excellent covering. The prepared paper root coverings of tar or asphalt felts are very desirable, and are generally dust-proof. Shin- gles make a very acceptable covering providing that the roof is not less than one-third pitch. The Frame 0! the Implement Shed. The width and height of the struc- ‘ ture will determine in a large meas- ure the dimension of the st ctural material. Narrow buildin with stable or hip root can be framed of 2 x 4 inch lumber. A building design- ed with shed roof willrequire heav- ier rafters; 2 x 6 inch for buildings over 12 feet wide, unless the building is high enough to permit the use of rafter braces.' Corner posts, sills and plates may be one piece 2 x 6 inch or doubled 3x 4 inch. Sheds that are ‘ ‘- - â€"â€"-A“ “-0 And UUUUICU 0 built open front must be well braced to stand both. side and downward strain. The posts on one side may be not well in to give a wide one or overhang. A convenient type 0! shed or ehelter may be constructed by erecting one line of posts and constructing thereon a. frame that will give eumcient width to shelter wagons or large implements and be wide open all round during the per: ‘ {we ‘â€" _- __A_ ale-n "luv vau we.
