By the 1980s, many of the original buildings were deteriorating and some were closed for safety reasons. Similarly, after 75 years, the facilities were no longer representative of modern beliefs and treatments for mental health.

Plans for the construction of a new facility at Whitby Psychiatric Hospital began in earnest in the mid 1980s and the new design, like Govan's in 1912, would represent the epitome of psychiatric care. The design was the product of a collaboration of three architectural firms: Crang & Boake, Cannon, and Moffat Kinoshita. The village-like setting of the original hospital was maintained with the creation of patient pods, courtyards, access to the beautifully maintained outdoors, and a main artery, 1400 feet long, that provides access to all all of the eight interconnected buildings.

In November 1993, ground was broken for the construction of the new building and in October 1994, on its 75th anniversary, the hospital was renamed Whitby Mental Health Centre. 15 September 1996 marked the official opening of the new building. Filled with natural light from the skylights and large windows, the facility was the first new mental health centre in Canada in over 25 years. Over 5000 people attended the opening and toured the building.

In 2009, Whitby Mental Health Centre was renamed Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. The Whitby Mental Health Centre began operating under the Public Hospital Act as a 'stand-alone' facility in 2006 and is governed by a Board of Directors that consists of members from the surrounding community. Their inclusion represents the significant role that Ontario Shores has had and continues to have in the Whitby community.
