Glenn Beauchamp of Whitby is off to a good start in his lid for another trip to the Summer Olympics after he was first in the 71 kg. Division in the Canadian Olympic judo trials in Montreal over the weekend.

Beauchamp defeated former world championship silver medalist Hartley Jones of Vancouver.

He will next compete at the Canadian Championships April 24 in Hamilton, where, if he wins, he will make the Olympic team that travels to Seoul, Korea later this year.

If Beauchamp is defeated, he will get another opportunity in a fight-off.

He is now completing his thesis for a Masters degree in business from Pacific Coast University in California, is coming off a bad shoulder injury he suffered last year.

Beauchamp, 25, competed in the 1984 Olympics and finished fourth.

His brother, Brian, 29, won the Ontario championship last year in a higher weight division. However, Brian, a customer services attendant for U.S. Air out of Montreal, is not competing at the national level.

Brian’s twin Brad, who works for Air Canada in Toronto, is no longer involved in judo, nor is youngest brother Steven, 24, a model in Italy.
