- A black and white photograph of Reverend Matthew Gold (1835-1938).
- Notes
- Reverend Matthew Gold was born at East Nurcott Farm, Winsford, Somerset, England, on February 28, 1835. He came to Canada about 1855 and worked on a farm while gaining a teacher's certificate. He took a course at Woodstock College and became a Baptist minister with charges at Whitby, Whitevale and Lindsay. Later he served as a supply minister for vacant churches, and was Superintendent of Missions in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba. He lived about 50 years in Canada and returned permanently to England after a financial crisis, in 1905. He lived in Whitby at various times, the last being 1885 to 1904. He returned to Somerset in England, and learned to ride a bicycle at the age of 60 and was still riding at 95. In his retirement he preached for the Methodists. He died at Acklands in the hamlet of Luckwell Bridge, Somerset, England, on October 19, 1938 at the age of 103 and is buried in the parish church yard at Winsford.
