Toboggans are a traditional form of transportation for Canada’s natives and Inuit. The J-shaped sleds are an efficient way of transporting people and objects on the snowy and icy ground. Toboggans have also become a form of entertainment for children of all ages as they are used to speed down large hills during the holiday months.

The first skates were developed in Finland over five thousand years ago. They were originally made from bone and were attached to a boot or other footwear. Traditionally, they were used as transportation for hunters during the winter months. Hunters found they could conserve valuable energy by skating around the frozen lakes of Finland.

Now, skates are used by many people for sports or recreational activities. Sports like ice hockey, figure skating, and speed skating have become entrenched in Canada’s winter identity.
