Cobourg Firemen and Parade Machine - c.1870 Details Volunteer fire brigades long played an important part in social life. Shown here in front of Victoria Hall, the Parade Machine had no practical application but made a great show with pumpers, hose and hook-and-ladder. It is believed the whole event might have been inspired by a Gilbert and Sullivan opera being written around this time. I. O. O. F. Parade (Independent Order of Foresters) - c.1910 Details The Independent Order of Foresters is one of the world’s oldest and largest fraternal benefit societies with over one million members.The Orange Institution, more commonly known as the Orange Order, is a Protestant fraternal organisation based predominantly in Northern Ireland and Scotland. The Order was the chief social institution in Upper Canada. It remained a predominant political force in southern Ontario well into the twentieth century. This is a reproduction of an actual photograph taken at the Cobourg Horse Show of 1912. The horse is "Confidence" owned by Sir Clifford Sifton, with Jack Hamiliton up. "Confidence" beat the world record with a clean jump of 7ft. 10 5/8 ins.
