Thornton House, King Street West, exterior
DetailsThis King Street West house, which is believed to be the oldest residence in Colborne, features the Georgian style (1720-1840) of architecture. Georgian refers to the eras of the first three King George’s reigns when this style gained wide popularity in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States. Hallmarks of this style include a symmetrical façade with restrained ornamentation. During the same period of time architecture was heavily influenced by the Adams style which advocated for a comprehensive detailing of interior and exterior design aspects. The King Street West house was built in two stages in the early 19th century, sometime between 1809 and 1830.
