Thornton House, King Street West, hearth Details
The five bay construction results in a rectangular footprint across the front of the house and lends itself well to a centre hall layout. An imposing back to back fireplace with an 8 foot square chimney in the centre of the original space provided heating and a ready hearth for cooking. The architect included a secret passage and several hiding place – the purpose of which in this house is unknown, but are reminiscent of the “priest holes” of Elizabethan England. There are 9 rooms with 9 foot high ceilings and some original pine floors.

Finely carved elements including fluted fans and starbursts on the two other fireplace mantels complement the overall Georgian architectural scheme, and represent the American interpretation of Georgian design known as the Federal style.
