DetailsHandwriting from the 19th century is sometimes difficult for today's reader to understand. Since the early 19th century until recently, block lettering and later cursive writing was an important skill acquired in the early years in school. One's own specific signature and writing style emerged through the years. Decorative flourishes can sometimes be seen at the start of a letter or the end of a letter. Cursive writing is an expressive form of communication, but today some people question whether it is a necessary skill.
