Apple Growing in Cramahe
Introduction
St. Lawrence Apple Tree, Cramahe Township
St. Lawrence Apple Tree, Cramahe Township Details
Apple orchards in Cramahe form a cornerstone of the local agricultural industry. This vital industry, which started around the 1860s, reached national and international markets. Blossoming apple trees in the spring time were a welcome sight to growers, workers and the community in general. Harvesting this crop in the fall brought work for pickers, barrel makers, and railway companies and created income for the local economy. The relatively mild climate conditions along the edge of Lake Ontario allowed Cramahe an almost ideal environment for apple growing. This Cramahe apple tree has been identified as the oldest living tree in Canada, dating to the 1850s.
