DetailsThe invention of postcards in the late 1800s created an exciting new form of expression both as written communication and as a visual. The messages were often brief, seemingly the text messages of their time. The sender chose the image, typically of a specific location, allowing him or her to express themselves through pre-printed commercial photography or graphic arts. Just after the turn of the century people could also send a photograph postcard of themselves or friends or family, a beloved location, or a new travel destination. The people of Cramahe enthusiastically enjoyed this postcard revolution. Postcard companies, Cramahe merchants, studio photographers, and itinerant photographers offerred postcard processing services to Cramahe residents. These early postcards provide us with a satisfying sense of time, place, history, and personality, especially when a message has been written on the reverse side.
