Churches in Cramahe Township, like in many other rural places, have always played a central part in the lives of the community. They are places of worship that instill a sense of belonging and foster a sense of community. Churches are also often used by its congregation as a place for social gatherings and communal events.
Cramahe Township has been home to a wide variety of churches. In addition to numerous Methodist Churches, other places of worship include the Trinity Anglican Church, a Pentecostal Church, a Presbyterian Church, a Baptist Church, a Missionary Church and an undenominational church, the Gospel Oasis.
Congregations were usually actively involved in the building of their churches. More prominent parishioners would often donate a piece of land, or some building such as a barn to be refitted. Churches were financed with money collected by the congregation, and built using local materials, often by the parishioners themselves.
A number of Cramahe’s historical churches have undergone profound changes since the 19th century. Their life spans have varied greatly as many moved locations, amalgamated or closed. Several churches have served multiple generations of families. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Heritage United Church Salem and Castleton United Church were founded in the 19th century and continue to provide services today. A few churches that were founded in the 20th century also serve the Cramahe community.
